Halfway positions versus final mostly tell story of solid pace. First two home able to make effort off that pace and come clear together looking like better types. 3rd & 5th lesser types with RO perhaps just over OR70 and Sarandjam OR60s and they both stalled off the pace. Pace set enough to put newcomers and Angle Knight under enough pressure that they could not make any forward moves and stalled and faded together and dissappointing some of them could not finish with Royal Opera & Sarandjam who are not strong open maiden quality. Two Goldolphin horses, in particular, seemed able to get to 2nd rank to midfield positions at halfway comfortably enough but unable to make progress. A brief effort from SITS but faded in the last 1F. In previous years the earliest 6f debuts from SB Suroor have not been high class and OR80s at best. Have often needed the debut to improve from. SITS supported as if better than that. The big 'But' in looking at the race shape was what was Trade Storm doing? In last at halfway at more than 10L off the lead and driven along. Made up places wide late past the stalling & fading group to finish 4th, beaten 9L by the winner. He missed the pace that folded back the others that finished 3rd+ so was perhaps just plugging on through tiring horses. But nothing else made ground from further back (other than DrG) and he was not doing it efficiently being bustled along in rear. Seemed to show something but a £1,500 retainee at the sales related to minor winners and the dam has not produced a winner since 2001 with 5 later foals. Trainer has only had one 2yo winner ever. An odd, mixed, story and on trainer record one to watch NTO rather than stick in the Notebook. Go looking for excuses and SITS seemed to be hanging right for much of race (with Dettori quietly trying to balance & control it rather than the Spencer routine of standing up in the saddle & panicking). Enough to be a real excuse over. Seemed to show a knee action TP & no surprise to hear connections say he needs easier going and/or a flatter track. WS, AK, Commercial & Pasquino to some extent all given quiet rides overall. The first 3 in rear and allowed to drift back in the last 2f for minimum effort. Pasquino just HnH until 1 whip strike to the last 1F. Suggest trainer Zarooni is no David Loder. Some set of these better than they showed for educational rides. Commercial paddock reviewed and an OK OR75+ type with development. Should improve notably NTO. AK still look green or unwilling and not bullied out of it. Almost look like a Nursery set-up or waiting for switch to lesser track to win. Perhaps in the early 7f maidens in the North if he has not improved before then. |
