Field raced Stands' Rail. Solid pace developed along the rail side and race set-up for Closers running Centre track side of the group. A good example of how weak some Nurseries can be. 15 horses originally declared had run a collective 62 times for a grand total of one win. That in a Yarmouth seller. This sort of low level Nursery is not always a good vehicle for the 'Support the Topweight' mandate. But, this one produced a win for the topweight with the next two highest weighted fighting the places out. Leaving the feeling that the rest are so poor that even unproven topweights are 'Classy' in the context of the race. FC on 4TO and a development that goes - FTO too fat to compete, STO a solid run in a pace war maiden at York and might have placed but for getting unbalanced and then hampered. Inexplicable poor run over 5f. Given time to develop and has the size to be the 'Class' of this field but without needing to improve much. Ajaafa small but competent to peg the form level. Volcanic Ash supported and really should be competitive off his OR as a physical type. But, three more Johnston juvenile runs on the day produced a 9th, 11th and an adrift 4th of 4. The stable's 2yos seem to have more wrong with them than being slow to come to hand. Which means that he will have a burst of winners when they come right. Both from new starters and the well handicapped horses who are running off marks that do not reflect their ability. Fascinating to listen to trainer Goldie talking about his training methods on the day. Sounded very different to the usual. Many trainers do lots of slow work and rarely gallop at racing pace in training. Goldie said he mostly did 'Interval Training' with shorter bursts and nearly all work at Racing Pace. [Interval training in humans being a method to build up resistance to faster paced running with short bursts with an 'Interval' (say 60s of rest) in between before another faster burst. The Interval is then shortened until, if you have the basic ability, it disappears and you can run the full race distance at the faster pace. The answer to the question of how to run races faster being to run faster in training]. He said he thought that after years of training most horses can only really run for 2f and matching the 2F out efforts you see elsewhere. Therefore he timed all his horses over 2-3f on his gallops and the speed they ran it at told him what type of horse they were (sprinter, mile, stayer, etc). Not a trainer who is trying to tie horse down to distances as such and Nanton an example. Said his horses were trained more to produce a burst in late race and try to be picking up the leaders (the exact opposite of Mark Johnston, for example). |
