Not messing about this year the Hannons, are they. 2yos fitter and readier in 2010 than usual and debut failures brought back to win STO (two today). RDV had attended a strong pace at Nottingham and was struggling to go with the leaders at halfway. He then got squeezed out of his gap in the leading line as Surely This Time hung badly left (a classic case of the gap going faster than he was). Jockey Hughes switched him left but he never recovered momentum and was eased after he started hanging left. So, what to do next time? Drop him in and ride him for a finish perhaps. Not this year for the stable. Blast him out into an uncontested, lead up the Concrete Strip next to the stands' rail. 5L Clear after a furlong and 8L before 2F with the others made up of LL being held up, Alfraamsey lacking the basic pace having let him go initially and three newcomers in various stages of finding it all too much for their nous and ability to not hang left. RDV settle pace a little before making an effort at 2F out. Responded inside the last furlong to LL joining him and plugged on to see that one of despite stalling a little himself. LL finish in front of RDV at Nottingham so 5/4f whereas RDV opened 8/1 here. In Paddock Review terms they are similar horses with RDV a little bigger overall. Look in the Flat, low dimensional, Form Book result for Nottingham and RDV was beaten a lot of lengths and LL has a '2' next to his name. LL must be the better horse and hence the SPs. One of the biggest problems with Racing analysis is the lack of a proper context for assessing races in the 'Form Book'. All the colour goes out of the Story. Jockey Holland interviewed before racing said that LL was a solid horse and he had a kick to make an effort later in the race. But, it was only a short effort so you had to use it properly. At Nottingham he had used it to jump to the lead as the hanging Surely This Time (a horse the trainer has talked up since & better in Paddock Review than the result reads) broke up the leading line. But he stalled towards the line and allowed the outpaced Orientalist to get to him. Jockey keen to hold him up here and that allowed RDV to go clear while LL tried to drop in with Alfraamsey. With leader clear LL allowed to go into clear 2nd after halfway to start to try getting RDV back. Alfraamsey lack pace to be able to go with him. Travelled well to get to RDV inside the last 1f. A brief effort by LL (in line with what his jockey said & having to use some of his effort to close the initial wide gap) to duel with RDV but stalling towards the line again. Alfraamsey finish well after getting behind on debut. Unable to go pace of RDV or close the gap down to him with LL. Made progress in the last 1F to get to the other two late on as they stalled. Clearly has OR75+ ability but a fast 5f not look right for him. |
