SUMMARY
Very fast Conditions on day with a wet track and a stiff, cold, Tailwind. Fastest time run by a 2yo in 2009 was 59.26s by R Woody in December and that faster than any since the start of 2004. Next fastest was Stevie Gee in 59.36s in 2006 who proved up to Listed Class. Second Division of Maiden produced a 2yo Course Record. For comparison the Older filly La Capriosa (off OR58) ran 57.69s on the day carrying 1lb less.
Trainer Fahey interviewed before racing said his two runners in the Divisions where both faster types than Brocklesby winner Chiswick Bey. He said he had run that one on soft turf at Doncaster because he knew it would stay 5f in the conditions and that one might not run for a while. He also said that the second Division runner Arctic Feeling was faster than Jamesway, less laid-back and probably the more natural runner. Jockey Hanagan named Arctic Feeling as his best ride and the confidence was apparent.
Both Fahey runners by the sire Camacho with Jamesway a full brother to early 2009 juvenile winner Star Rover. Jamesway a taller, more lightly built, type than his brother. Arctic Feeling more neatly made and more solidly built.
Arctic Feeling ran 0.69s faster than his stablemate and broke the 2yo Course Record. The 'whisper' was that he was 2 lengths better and the time differential was more than that. But, the two divisions were run differently in that Jamesway had an uncontested lead and won a little comfortably. Arctic Feeling was joined by the filly Style And Panache after 1.5F of the race and he responded. She had enough ability to keep with him and pressing him to more effort until she stalled inside the last half furlong. Arctic Feeling showed a willing attitude and lengthens well showing a fluent movement. He was still going forward at the finish and pulling away. The type of debut of that suggests definite OR90+ and competitive to win early Listed events and see how he progresses. A slight niggle in that Fahey debut winners have a mixed record of developing from strong FTO efforts.
A very good debut from Style And Panache and would have been a typical Evans debut winner except for finding a tough race to start in. Taller and narrow and fit for the day so doubts about how far she can develop. But, showed unusual ability to press the winner for more than 3F and make a couple of efforts before stalling. OR80+ and come up short in Listed and probably a longer term OR70s.
A big gap back to the others but in a faster time than Div I and this group looked a more substantial physical set. The third here probably ran 20-30lbs better than 3rd in Div I so probably not the wroing side of a Garbage Gap but and ok debut behind two unusually good one. Daas Rite lost ground at the start but got to 3rd qucikly after 2F out and plugged on well enough. Smaller, compact sprinter with enough power & depth to believe an OR70+ type as a sprinter.
Peppercorn Rent a taller, narrower model and another solid debut by trainer standards. Perhaps an OR65-70 type. Mishtaag ran better than the results suggests and had got worked up in the preliminaries. A compact but strong 'Bull' and recorded the best rating by the stables FTOs so far. Attended the stiff early pace quite well. Probably OR75+.
Into the suspect ones after that. Barista an ok size and talked up by trainer. Front and back halves seemed unmatched with front quite likeable and strong but the back less good and not move that well behind in walk. In a tough race to start and kept at it for a long time without being fast or knowing enough. Check NTO.
Bold Deceiver a tiny filly by comparons and very 'Up' behind and not level. Even being very fit and on STO not enough to get her getting blown away by bigger types. Perhaps underperformed because a little by not facing the kickback? But OR50s and down.
Cruise Tothelimit fitter than trainer's other runner but too too mentally immature to get involved. Check again but seemed lighter framed. Soviet Bolt did a fair impression of a 'Hannon' 2yo in looks in his oange Australian noseband but slab fronted and lacking athleticism. Clueless in race and suspect.
Sailor Boy a solid size and seemed to carry himself well. Mostly balanced if a little round behind. Check how he develops. Does he tighten up and becone a full sprinter of start to grow and look a bit light-framed and lengthy.
