Slower pace and race developed into a 2f sprint. All 9 within 3L of the lead at halfway. Field raced centre to Far side in the straight. Leading line of SStep & BLaw with ET just behind produced 2 of the placed horses and little change overall. SStep not finish the race off and in a period when the Johnston horses have put a better standard of performance together in the last 10 days. Orientalist showed an ability to make 1-2L when winning at Sandown LTO (uncommon example of running the leader down). This race set-up for him to show similar ability and gain 2L form 2nd rank to to get up to win. But, overhauling two horses who have run in sellers and produced one placed effort previously in 7 runs. Which does not suggest this was a strong nursery or performance. Other runners in field mostly a similar mix of unproven maidens lacking progressive profiles. One exception Fahey's Common Touch who had been talked up before his debut. Form of his win not been franked but inconclusive at present with his runner-up failing to badly to be true form. Surprise to see him open as long as 9/4 if he were as good as the rating and hype suggested from FTO. Travelling ok 2f out and unable to produce the forward effort of the winner (started final sprint next to him). But, not fading and working back towards the leaders later on. Perhaps just not suited to the way the race set-up although managed a soild forward effort over 6f here on debut. Fahey runners still getting winners but not in the 'top' and consistent form of much of the earlier season. |
