Stiff, gusty, headwind on the day. This race produced a fascinating mix of factors interacting to produce a close finish. At least three different sets of runners leading at various points. The main factors would be the headwind as a negative to frontrunners. Secondly the pace was too stiff for the conditions and set by the stands' rail runners. Both of these factors show up with the Halfway positions and the prminent runners eding up well beaten with the stands' rail pressers (Meow, BBear & AF) the worst faders and Meow walking by the last 1f. The third factor was that the field split into two groups. Four runners went Centre track which was where most of the races developed during the four day meeting. Jockey Murtagh on Meow kicked her on early to go clear and then cross to the rail (perhaps wary of the suspension he got for a similar manoeuver on Starspangledbanner earlier in the year). This set off a group of pressers near the rail. Zebedee hauled back early to the last pair, with the similarly held up BMoth, and Jockey Hughes decided to go across to sit behind the bigger group on the rail. FTP led in Centre track but probably 2L+ down on the leader at halfway although ahead of the hold-up horses on the stands side. Race developed after halfway with the (invisible on normal TV transmission) Centre Group going from begin behind towards the last 2f to leading by 1.5f out. As the pacemakers folded on the stands side the race was being fought out by the Centre track runners with TTIG & LChoice duelling at 1f out with the later effort starter Kertiya getting to them. As these centre track leaders faded inside the last 0.5f the first 4 home came forward as the representaives of the hold up horses on the stands side who switched left to Centre-Stands strip to move forward. Hughes on Zebedee presumably panicked a bit by how far the Centre track runners had got away towards 1f out so did not go in for his later race Pounce. Instead got got the winner fully engaged by 1f out and his effort got him to the lead but he was stalling by the line and something might well have overhauled him with a bit more distance to go. In summary a complicated race and where you raced in terms of track and pace position important with the headwind an added issue. Split the runners into different sets and compare them for ability but comparing the different sets a bit more complicated. For example, a firmer ground blast without the headwind might well have produced a notably different result if the horses had been in exactly the same places after 2f. |
