Halfway positions versus final placings quite telling in terms of how the race developed in regard to pace. 1st & 2nd through halfway had both made big efforts to cross in front of the field (XF) to get to the rail from wide draws. The very zippy mini-filly Abzo topping MajorM's effort to cut him off on the rail after he had hampered half the field with his cross. This pair going too quickly and added to the early efforts meant they were fading towards the last 1f. 1st two at the finish were the pair who had got to 2nd rank comfortably and from wide enough draws to avoid the early race shemozzle on the rail. They jumped to the lead as the leading pair faded and got enough of a break to hang on despite the fact they were fading late on. They were being closed to on the way to the post by a line of horses plugging on together. The outside edge of this line being OS who had looked unwilling throughout. The other horse not to close up with the line was TS who had been one of the worst sufferers early on and hampered back to the last pair. Seemed to be going forward as per the script but started hanging inside the last 2f. Bumped into the exiting Abzo inside the last 1f and eased. The cruising traveller from his last two runs never evident here dropped to 5f against specialists and not helped by the dodgems bit. Worth seeing how he goes NTO. |
