Only race on the 5f course and with a Headwind. Leading line of 4 through halfway within just over 0.5L of the lead. Halfway positions to final placings reveal how that line broke up and the horse that persisted best was the rail runner PPastime. He produced the best forward effort of any runner at 2f out and only overhauled late one and a good effort. 1st & 2nd home were the pair sitting in second rank behind the Lo4 at halfway. Other three further back with Barking last at nearly 6L back and having done a number of things wrong. Pace not strong enough to allow the Closers to get to the 2nd Rankers by the finish and assisted by 2 of the 3 getting hampered. Cinderkamp never got a clear run as the Line-of-4 broke up and fell back onto him. Solid effort by Barking making progress wide late and better effort overall than the final result. Slow start and hampered when making his initial run and able to find a second effort late on. Subdued performance from BM and not responding well in last 2f although never fading. Horse looked to be 'saving himself' in some way. Probably physical ouchiness rather than mental and has looked a full trier before. JSmudge apparently needs this sort of 5f where the pace breaks up to allow a closer. Has won twice at 5f but the jockey said the leaders had him stretched here and he won by staying as he did on his Catterick win behind a pace war. |
