Untypical confidence on debut behind Masked Marvel as a Gosden FTO. Trainer's strong debuts usually better class and often OR100+ types. This one a typically taller son of Montjeu but with more width and bulk than many. Perhaps the dam, as a notably big and bulky girl, as her picture shows has added some substance to the Montjeu traits. 1st and 2nd through halfway finished in the first two places (as ever) with MM taking a bit of time to get organised but well on top of the smaller leader Mutayaser at the line. The Stoute colt ran ok but got the run of the race and unconvincing as anything other than an ordinary maiden winner type. One of two runners from the Leicester maiden he made his debut in beaten on the day. That race not strong form and the quality going forward of the participants needs some teasing out. The interesting horse from the Leicester maiden is more of a long-term prospect in Dumbarton. A big, galloping type from a staying, develop with 3yo+, female side. By a faster sire but looks more to take after the female side and a niggle that his neck is too big for the rest of him. But the scope to win his maiden then work his way up through better handicaps in the Stoute manner. After a good 10-14 day period for Mark Johnson with 2yos the last week has looked less consistent. Another blow-out here and stll the stable seems not to be really into gear (whenever that get's written 3 of the next 5 win...). A race stiff with reused horse names from the later 70s and 80s, surely. Wasn't the first Masked Marvel a Cecil twilight horse? Shooting Line again, another to add to the pile. |
