Field Raced Stands Side. Little change in positions from halfway other than two fades by newcomers. Usable pace and short run to bend seemed to allow biggish gaps to appear early. Prominent racers with a headstart controlling the race. Winner able to lose 2-3L with a slow pick-up from a wide draw and take a little time to respond to the jockey driving him. Jockey Nicholls on Sinadou leading into the bend on the rail but stacking the field behind him (unusually since his default in to press on in the lead). Jockey on Well Sharp found himself 4-5 wide in midfield to the bend on the outside of the slow moving Stack as his horse started to respond. Did the right thing in moving forward to go to the lead early into the long bend 1 wide. DV responded to hold rail and allowed to just head the winner briefly around halfway on the bend to the straight. Second String winner for new connections in that category. First string (UGuy) got squeezed back to midfield as the leading edge of the Stack hit the first turn losing 2-3L then dropped onto the rail and poorly placed to respond as the gaps started to appear on the bend for just as average pace by the leaders. But just an average response from him when asked and stalling earlier than some of the lesser profile types at the finish. Not looking a fully committed racehorse. The winner bigger and more athletic than UG anyway and the 'Second' status perhaps an indication of the stable thinking he would be too Green (as his first 100 yards here would have supported) and poorly drawn. The way the race developed getting a bit behind on the outside worked Ok because the jockey had a choice about what to do when a slow moving stack formed up. A good example of how the 'Draw' is more complicated than just Numbers. An inside draw for the winner and he would have found the field collapsing onto him early and he wouldn't have won. Swop the draws over between the owner's two runners and quite probable that neither would have placed. |
