Field raced centre track. One of those Group races that make you wonder what it is for? Has not produced a worthwhile horse (older British Group winner, say) since an untypical 2005 edition which had Aussie Rules winning and Araafa in the ruck surrounded by the usual mix of handicappers and twilight horses. Before that you have to go back to Milk It Mick as a later Grade 1 winner in 2003 and nothing much else in the 2002-4 period. How does this race match with the Horris Hill? Do we need both? But, Races losing Group status seems impossible and the Pattern Committee's job only to create new ones and upgrade others. How can that possibly fit in with providing a stiff test of the available horses? It can only end up with rewarding lesser ability. But, the marketeers will be happy which is perhaps the real point With a horse beaten twice in nurseries off OR8Os marks winning from an indifferent group you wouldn't have a lot of belief in this year's race proving better than the last four. |
