0.89s faster than juvenile Seller on card with this winner carrying 3lbs more. OR77 4yo handicapper ran 73.58s carrying 4lbs more than here. Maiden has mixed history but has produced useful horses when Mark Johnston & Michael Jarvis have run better ones for the Maktoums. Last year's race also won by Tom Tate but with Kylladdie who is a low OR70s handicapper. Rest of that large field poor and 4th & 5th won sellers. This look a better edition despite the lack of a Johnston rep. DC & Anddante break well and cross over to the rail to form a leaing pair. SAJam drop in behind them. Typical race with pace inccreasing to 2F out and then the full efforts being made. Tate said before the race that Breathless Storm is the fastest horse he has trained. On debut BS had taken a field along at a solid pace but then hung and looked a difficult ride. Change of jockey here from over-reacting Spencer to a more anonymous style in Fenton. Jockey presumably told to settle him behind others. Took a bit of time for BS to get the message and two lots of being held back to end up midfield. Travelled comfortably enough but got unbalanced on the ramp and not switch out through horses very slickly. Found enough to plug on past the stalling from pair and looking able to produce more but obviously learning rather than doing it naturally. Presume he is better class if he can grow up and become more professional and perhaps be allowed to use his natural speed to put other horses under pressure. DC a better debut from the first batch of runners. This one Transcend owned (partnership with Graham Wylie) so would expect it to be a usable OR70s one, at least. Anddante a long price in a season when the Market has been informative about the Easterby 2yos. Ought to be OR70s on this. SAJam a lesser physical type and OR60s and a good sign the others left him behind. Greek Islands another woeful debut from Zarooni and jockey seemed only interested in getting him through the race and teaching him something & never expecting to be able to get involved. 7th runner and only Ahtoug has been able to get properly involved in a race. Think back to the second half of last season and the Suroor Godolphin 2yos were winning in btaches on debut. But, that really started from July for the high class ones and August+ for the ok ones. Both Godolphin stables seem to be behind at present including with older horses so perhaps the same later season build? Paul Midgley did solid job on the AW over the winter. In the last two seasons he has improved his 2yo record from a 3% Strike Rate outfit to an over 6% one. Just under 10% is an average return so still moderate in SR terms but with a lot of moderate horses so some excuse. A very poor start this year with 13 individual runners already and the only place being in a 3 horse race. His pair here both lost out the back. In the last two seasons the winners he has had have all made their debuts by May 9th and the later starters pretty poor athletes. Has he got anything usable this year or has he changed his methods at all? Of those that have run you would still have Another Wise Son & Alensgrove on the possible winners list. Blind Stag ran too freely last time and is probably capable of winning at a low level as well. |
