Soft Ground but notable rain at times in the 2 hours before racing and wet going. You could hear the moisture in the surface as the horses galloped and some where slipping in the canter to post. Rain showers during the meeting so you would question how to compare the three 5f race times. That matters because the 2yo race was run first and was only 1.75s slower than the Conditions race and faster than the 3yo handicap (won by OR70 Kylladdie). Light breeze as a three-quarter tailwind from the left. Only 4 slower times in 2yo events since 2004 with three of those being in early April on Soft or Heavy as with this race. Most notably the David Evans filly Calypso Girl ran 65.38s on April 15th in 2008 carrying 3lbs more. Evans ran three with Style And Panache appearing his best after a good debut at Southwell. For those that want to blandly suggest that Fibresand equates to Soft going how much comparison is there between running 58 seconds for 5f at Southwell and running 65s here over 15 yards further? She is the biggest of his three although an early, precocious type doing it more on height. She is narrow bodied, like two planks nailed together, so has development limitations. As a general point like type of lanky, underpowered one, can often struggle in Softer going. SAP is dropped in behind the other two Evans' fillies who set off to make the pace. Watch the VT closely and you knew after 2F that she was in trouble. Slightly niggled along before halfway and showing a climbing action, part slipping at one point, and clearly not handling the going. Jockey Spencer did the right thing is sitting still and letting her find some sort of rhythm. But later in the race when asked to pick up and go and get the other pair she could not get the purchase to increase the pace and ony closed up a little. To compare the situation the other two Evans fillies could never run 58s at Southwell but are smaller, neater, types given a start on going that was unhelpful to trying to get the grip to accelerate. [That can be similar to Southwell often but not when they are breaking course records] Here is a - Picture - of the finishing run. Small trier Little Libretto is in the centre with her little neck stuck out giving it all she has. On this side is the slightly bigger Bajan Bullet who was the second sring. She has a non-5f pedigree and ran in a pair with Little Libretto throughout but usable to get by her. A race where all five horses finished in the positions they were in before the end of the first 1F. SAP is on the far side and has go closer to the other pair but not able to get to them because of the slippery, wet, ground. LL is probably an OR50s filly in the full term. A good comparison may well be Calypso Girl who had also run unplaced in the Brocklesby before winning here STO. That was her last win and it was downhill afterwards as she 'failed to train on'. She is currently uncompetitive of OR45 on the AW as a 4yo. BB is perhaps OR60s over further but smaller and notable light behind. SAP is OR70s and needs a faster test. Another lacking the scope to make he full physical improvement needed. The fourth horse in the picture, jockey in Blue, is Hannon's colt Takeaway. He had won a Kempton maiden in a slow time. Debut winners for the trainer usually indicate a Listed+ horse but he won in a slow time. Later runners from the race perhaps suggest it was an 'Accidental FTO Win' in a moderate race by a 'solid' but not high class horse. Takeaway running in this race was a bit odd because the stable's early debut winners usually run in Conditions events next if useful. He is a typical Hannon type and build (different set-up to any of the fillies for trainers who buy different physical types) and well prepared, Smaller to medium by acceptable overall but without the stronger power you would expect from a better one. Another to not handle the ground well and allowed to fade unpressed int he final furlong. Better than he showed here without being Listed type on the evidence. Channon's Wotsthehurry was typical for an early filly of his. Slightly bigger than the two, smaller, Evans runners and with a bit more length. But, typically, running up light behind. A OR65-9 type. But, also typical recently for Channon, too worked up. Walking round the pre-parade ring already starting to sweat and the only one not wearing a rug. This had got to being too Fizzy before they went to post. Wears a blanket to go into the stalls. Reared out of the stalls and last early. Faed early as her pre-race attitude would have told you to expect on testing going. Needs to settle down to be competitive at her level. |
