Going changed to GF after this race (first of meeting). Field race wide from early on and cross to stands' rail as soon as possible rather than going shortest way around bend & up the far rail. Clear that the opinion was that the Stands' rail had received less of the (unspecified by the course) water applied by the groundsmen. Winner ran the stands' rail in the straight with EW outside of him. Strong pace to race with 4 runners with previous outings forming up to press on. Leading line of 3 at halfway on Stands' rail out as CW-PR-EW within half a length of each other and LD on rail 2L back (showed more here). HC in 5th but another 2L back and niggled along. Other 4 adrift and 11-15L back from the lead. Race Shape looked like 2 better ones pulling way with the two lesser types able to attend the pace fading back but only HC close enough to plug on past them. Adrift group not produce a closer of any sort. EW come from race that has proved reliable as form to follow and although beaten here ran well. EW stalling late on and not see 5f out fully here and similar at Windsor. Presume she would be able to see it out fully on less stiff finish. She also ran a little too freely early on after losing a length att he start. A similar size to CW if a little less build as a filly. CW the size and scope to be OR80+ and had not been able to show that fully last time at Catterick where a fast, downhill, undulating track had not allowed him to get balanced and into full stride. Jockey Spencer over-reacting to every pothole not assisting there either. With more experience, a flatter surface and an uphill climb to the finish he looked a different horse and saw the race out strongly. |
