Race run on New Strip of ground saved for the meeting. Hints during the earlier races that racing against stands' rail an advantage. Perhaps an impression created by lack of pace in preceding Group 2 won by OR120 Red Jazz (was OR113 until last race). The first three through halfway there near to rail fought finish out and never threatened by those racing wider. RO'Connor got similar run here making the pace down the rail. Frankel had to make his ground away from the rail and solid effort given that. Ran distance in 0.31s faster than Red Jazz at level weights and 2yos would receive around 14-16lbs at WFA. Take the difference literally between Frankel & Red Jazz and puts Frankel in the BHA OR range 127-136. But, time only 1.18s faster than the later Rockfel Stakes with that winner carrying 3lbs less. That looked an average edition, at best. Other two headline horses failed to give running. Saamidd referred to as 'lazy at home' by the whole set of Godolphin connections and had been taken on a racecourse gallop here during the week to liven him up. Very relaxed here in prelims and on way to start. Until he got about half a furlong from the stalls when be stopped and Dettori struggled to get him going again. Then behaved mulishly when offered to the stalls. Trouble loading and eventually forced in hooded after several attempts. Ran along the rail in behind and no response as the efforts went in later race and soon eased by Dettori. Clearly possible his temperament is not just 'laid back' but worse than that and perhaps he has learnt about the racecourse. Dream Ahead seemed to have ok conditions with a little rain and slower times. Pulled a little in behind but this did not appear to be the reason for his poor show. Had travelled very smoothly in previous races and made ground easily and never really had to show a full effort in his previous runs despite the wins. Never travelling in that way here and on the outside of the group. When pulled out to try to make effort he looked unbalanced and struggling to find his feet. Horse didn't look happy on the ground and this seemed more a case of not being sure of his footing than being too 'firm', for example. Still looks a 'green' horse learning and should come back to his previous level on the right ground. |
