SUMMARY
Outer course in use and stalls on Stands' side. Watering prior to meeting as Thurs (15mm), Friday (10-15mm) and Monday (10mm). Which had all resolved to produce a huge advantage to racing close to the stands' rails. 1st race of meeting a 6.1f Handicap won by OR70 3yo who ran the stands' rail from stall 12.
This race won by draw 10 of 11 runners from pair that raced closest to the stands' rail. (Picture).
Racing in mid track or far side meant no chance. 5.1 furlong handicap after this race saw field split into 2 groups and those that went far side well beaten. That race won by filly that ran the stands' rail from draw 12 of 16. Double figure draws account for 5 of first 6 home. Anyone who spent time the previous evening trying to assess the races on the straight track by form, pedigrees, etc. were wasting their time.
Strong pace in race and only 3 with previous runs and racing closer to stands rail involved from more than 2F out. JFL lead early but racing 4 lanes wide of rail & started to hang leftafter 1.5f towards the centre. Hang further after 3f to centre and carry the line racing centre wider to centre track and squeeze some wide on this group. Then cross back to join PW (left racing alone on the stands rail in interim) before 2F out and this pair duel, JFL gone too hard and stalling by the last furlong and fading notably late on. PW crossed over to rail shortly after start and ran on the best strip and finished the race off best. PW bulky, strong sprinter and probably just OR80+. JFL smaller, readier model and runs too freely. Early OR70s as his speak.
The Virtual Paddock (link above) for the race field shows Trade Storm as a similar bulky, stron type to PW and with a little more length and ought to rate as highly though perhaps better 7f+. TS had disadvantage of racing towards centre track for much of race and carried further towards centre by JFL before mid race. Not come across to join PW & JFL until inside the last 1F. Nothing else racing as wide as him managed to finish the race off at all. An excellent effort and proved the staying on promise of his debut was real. If he gets the right conditions and no bias issues you would think he could iron an Auction field out somewhere. Can even Mr Gallagher get the win he ought to with this one?
Excelebration run centre track and no chance to finish race off because of that and fading by the last 1F. Another bigger type with some range. Ought to be high OR70s and perhaps a little higher.
Roayh just ok for his high price. Ran a similar race to Excelebration in centre track and not unable to raise the pace that one did to halfway. Ok as an open maiden winner but not higher class.
Big break back to a mixed bag behind and the VP shows many of the issues. Smaller bunch in many cases. The filly HK taller & ok moder by leggy & narrow and underpowered. Might be usable around OR60 but running centre track against big colts here no good.
Torteval & WJ similar below medium size ones with some build positive but both stupid on the day and pictures show them caught in a similar bit of gormlessness. Both struggle with pace and racing centre track and WJ lose ground through being gree to halfway. Slight excuse for Torteval who got bumped out on the end of the line as the JFL hang to centre track sent a ripple through those already there. Neither of much interest.
FC bulkier than that pair but a bit fat on day and sloppy attitude. OK power behind but not that neatly put together. Nursery development type perhaps.
RFTBucks a fascinating horse but why was he even here? If something his size and shape turned up a 14F handicap at 3yo you would think he looked alright and lots to develop with. Big and a huge barrel but longer than a sprinter and lacking any sprinter snap. Moves like a stayer. Pedigree says 8f a minimum and his type says he would be better as a 3yo+ . Interesting to see how he develops but no surprise to see him too slow here even though he raced stands' side.
And finally, the $150k Liberty Cap and hasn't Princess Haya owned a lot of duff ones for the money she has laid out. The early debuts for Gosden include a fair number of poor ones for the Maktoums and this one small and mentally very young. His trainer has called him a 'sweet little horse' in a Stable Tour. Sweet, we don't need he can be a bit of bastard if he can run. Left behind after 2F because of greeness or moving poorly. Looks another suspect one.
