Odd looking race and similar in some ways to how races played out at Newcastle last year where the Far Side runners int he straight would often expire early. Those one the Stands' Side of centre often finish strongly relatively and look better than they actually were. Draw a line down the centre of the track and the first 3 home here raced on the Stands' side of it (spread from Front rank to back of group at halfway) & the figures in square brackets are the Lane estimates. Those on the Far side of the line expired early and too early to be just lack of ability or going a bit too strongly. Those fading badly included two with solid previous runs in WLB & CG so not just unproven newcomers underperforming. Second Division of race saw most jockeys make an effort to race towards the stands' side. Most notably Richard Hughes on the Hannon favourite and a combination who usually are aware of the best places to run and do something active about it in Hughes' case if necessary. This Division look thinner than Second unless WLB improve in line with his debut promise which did not happen. Time here 0.26s slower than 2nd Div and carrying 4lbs less despite the, apparently, taking way the first 3 were pulling way at the end. Put them in the 2nd Division and on times this winner might have got close to 3rd. These the only two races on the straight course and ground seemed slower there than on the round course. Roman Dancer appeared to have his front feet off the ground and be trying to put his nose over the top of the stall gate. When the gates opened the horse had lost the support of leaning on the front but not balanced enough to rock back properly onto it's hauches and drive off. Which meant driving off in the position it was in and at about 45 degrees into the air and then flopping down flat hoofed. Not a buck and nasty but making the best of where it was. |
