GF going produced by watering with 12mm applied on 17th and watering on the 18th to maintain the conditions plus 1mm of rain. 8.8 Going Stick on sprint course & 8.5 on the round course. Light breeze as a three-quarter headwind from the right. Another positive for trainer Teal who has slowly improved his handling of 2yos over 4 seasons with small sets. Always got them mostly ready for debut although in his first season four 2nd to 5th placed FTOs, at long SPs in bigger fields, did not develop to win during the turf season. Did well last year with two strong debuts, including his first FTO win, and both horses developed with racing and better types. Said he only had two ready so far this season and they have produced this win at 20/1 and a STO win off a debut where his filly ran too freely. Said he had some ok types in the later batch that he was looking forward to. Worth watching for their debuts. What to make of the quality? despite the extended distances suspect that the smaller Nayarra is one that will end up rated in the low OR80s but with limited scope. Channon will soup her up at 2yo and try her in better races to try to get that most pointless (in sensible, abstract terms) accolade of 'Black Type'. A categorisation where winning an early 2yo Listed race gets the same prestige as Sea The Stars. Utterly senseless and out-of-date and entirely typical of the thinking in racing. The winner has more scope. |
