SUMMARY
Going Stick 9.0 and FGF. Total of 5mm of rain Tues-Weds preceding meeting. Stalls Centre. Stiff Breeze as a Headwind for the last 2f and a three-quarter Headwind from the left earlier in the race.

More like the John Hills we know and a touch of Seb Sanders would surely have improved matters. Toffee Tart in a 4-way photo on debut at ASCT and clear of the 5th. Her defeat, along with Represent's at HYDK 50 mins later, meant that all three placed fillies in that photo have ben beaten STO with two unplaced. Toffee Tart 2nd here but as bad as being unplaced given the small field and the weak opposition. Toffee Tart had not looked straightforward at ASCT and has unseated Sanders TP and run loose for a while. In the race she was drifting out of contention after halfway until Sanders galvanised her for one, long, uninterrupted run. On the positive side she made the 2nd-3rd best effort that day along with the winner and the 5th (who has won since beating the 3rd who took much longer to get going at ASCT). Ridden here by the trainer's nephew (Patrick Hills) who has not had a winner for 200+ days and 40+ rides and presumably is struggling with his weight. At the Hannon yard in 2010 but rarely used, except on duff ones. Replaced by an imported Irish 5lbs apprentice at Hannon's in 2011. So, not the strongest 2/13f ever and the jockey a negative. Did not give a good ride and a shoddy start followed by TTart racing too freely. Rather than stoking her up for an extended effort he tried playing 'Hughes' and waiting and nohing much happened when he required some action immediately. Pehaps she was feeling the firm going and started rolling around. Not certain late on she would haul herself past the persistent rabbit Ida Inkley. Perhaps the Headwind playing a part again with Betty Fontaine (NR in a Conditions race last week) coming through late from being being the group to win going away. Appeared to be the Channon 2nd string on jockeys and the Market and another small one although in good condition. Race run in a slow time.

[Update = Mick Channon on his website news May 23rd = "Friday saw BETTY FONTAINE emerge as the surprise victor of the Bath maiden. On paper, she had little chance, especially with a hige odds on shot lining up in opposition, but her homework has shown us that she's a gutsy competitor who belies her diminutive size and is very much a bargain buy. At 800 Euros, it was perhaps understandable that she was overlooked as a 14/1 shot, but under Matthew Davies she sat last before coming into her own a furlong and a half from home. Produced late, she powered home to win very cosily & = I was delighted with Betty Fontaine. She was the very last one in, breeze up horses apart and the worry was that it might have come a little too quick. Having said that though, she's been a pleasure to train. She's not the biggest, but is all heart and has been thrown into work with winners and kept stepping up to the mark very time."]
