SUMMARY
£10k Bonus race & one of 4 on the day after a break.

GFG Going and watered but no details given. Going Stick at 8.0 reading. Stalls stands' side. Medium Breeze as a slight Headwind from the Left.

Hannon on his Website before the race = "Trumpet Major ran a super race in what looked a hot maiden at Newbury last week. He is owned by John Manley, who also has Dick Turpin, and this fellow is not unlike him. He was green early, but the penny dropped in the last 100 yards and he flew home to finish third. That was a very encouraging debut, and, though there are a few choicely-bred newcomers in the race, our fellow is pretty good."

Meehan on his Website = "MAROOSH - Nice colt who may just need the run. RIGHT TO DREAM - Syndicate-owned colt who has been pleasing in his work. Hopes for a prominent run."

Halfway positions to final give an incorrect view of the race. TM & HAB form up as a pair near the rail in the first 1F at an average pace at most. They then settled the pace after 1F, on a downhill stretch, and field stacked up behind them with lots of free running and a bit of hampering. This also allowed the greens ones to close up and the field spread over only 4L at halfway. Race kicked off just after 2.5f out and the rest of the race should be read as a 2F+ sprint. A lot of green ones and a fair bit of not trying too hard to finish too close to the winner aside from the two placers. HAB blown away by the sprint at 2F+ out as MMor moved up to engage TM and kick the race off.

TM the first rep from the important Newbury maiden to run and upheld the view of the front of that race as better class. Had taken time to get going at Newbury and looked a 7f+ type and finishing as strongly as any other to the line. In that context a slow run 6f at GDWD not designed to make him look good necessarily & perhaps a workmanlike scramble. But, able to kick clear and win comfortably and quite impressive. A bit of caution because he was able to control the race near the rail and only challenged by MMor who had been alongside him towards 2F out at NWBY and got left behind there. Plus, the rest of the field a mix of green and hanging and none able to mount a competent finish. But, one to develop further and get better for 7f+.

Macdonald Mor hanging and unable to produce a finish at NWBY and in good condition here. Joined TM towards 2F out but unable to match his effort although did enough to get to clear 2nd from the greenery behind. Perhpas an OR77-82 type.

Right To Dream the second runner for a partnership run by the Bloodstock Agents Meehan uses. They perhaps want positive results and their first runner (Right Result) touched off FTO as a Hannon 1st string in a 4 runner race earlier in the week. Partnership website has links to gallops videos which were just ok, anonymous and not looking a bigger type. One of the worst free-runners here then took time to realise what to do at 2F out. A solid finish but perhaps leaving the impression of an OR70s type and just an average Open Maiden favourite STO.

HAB completely outpaced by the sprint and dropped to last but never faded and plugged on at his pace. Another Johnston stayer needing further? MPot another Palmer debut to get prominent but then ran too freely and hanging right for much of the second half of the race so faded out of the sprint.

The other four all similar runs and finished in a heap. All notably green and then just ridden HnH in the the last 2f and only OFRome actually fading. 4 x Okish looking sizes and not showing anything that different in the jog home. Looking for promise difficult. Radiomarelli making a debut at a time when Beckett would start OR73-77 males and probably a fair yardstick to say that is what he is. OFR looked to run a bit less well. Maroosh one of the greenest and racing in centre track and got to 4th in the sprint before the jockey, inexplicably, eased him in the last 0.5f to hide the promise. Just medium size but better than the final result. BAngel also very green but got into a rhythm in the last 1F to roll on to 4th without ever having been involved in the race. Trainer used to a 'Ready FTO' one but has changed to uncompetitive debuts so this typical and probably solid promise. But, need to see how the quality of this race works out behid the winners. Possible that it is below Open Maiden level overall with the odd solid one or two mixed in rather than a proper demonstration of the abilities laid out before you.

[Hannon on his website the day after the race = " ..he looks to have another real nice colt in this fellow.... We were pleased with Trumpet Major on his debut at Newbury, where he was just mugged close home, and he won easily at Goodwood. However, we are not committed to running him at Royal Ascot. I'll talk to John and we will make a plan, but there is always the Newmarket July meeting, and he could take the Dick Turpin route and go to Goodwood for the Richmond Stakes." ]
