Going GF with 20mm applied to course since the last Meeting. Going Stick 8.8 at 9:00am. Stand's rail out by 12yds at the 6f start down to 7yds at the winning line. Strong breeze as a Three-quarter Tailwind from the right. Hannon on his website the day before = "Lord ofthe Shadows takes on four other winners in the opener, but he was impressive when he won there last month and we like him" Roger Charlton on his website on the day of the race = "Tioman Legend won in good style at Lingfield on fast ground but it was a weak race and the second that day, Red Socks was subsequently beaten 4 1/4 lengths at Kempton last week by a 33/1 shot and the 3rd Royal Purse was beaten a 1 1/2 lengths in a seller at Ripon recently. Todays race will tell us as to whether he may be possible to run at Royal Ascot, he is an attractive colt and with a good attitude." Juvenile Course Record and assisted by a very strong wind from behind. Very windy across whole country on the day with racing at CARL having to survive a 12:15 inspection as the worst of the rain and wind blew through. Fastest recent times were 58.75 by Hoh Mike (carry 2lbs less) in a mid-May Novice in 2006 and 59.25 (carry 3lbs more) by Another True Story in a maiden at the end of July in the same year. Bated Breath (OR108 rated 4yo) broke the 6f Course Record in the 7:40 race to highlight the unsually fast conditions on the day. Race played out like a solid pace followed by a 2F+ sprint at the end with it diffult for the first four home to differentiate themselves given the fast conditions. First 4 spread out from rail in the sprint as CTG-LOTS-BB-TIsl. In the sprint CTG made the best effort next to the rail (any advantage) and able to pull out 1L+ on the others and probably finish strongest as well. Other three made similar efforts and little change in their relative positions (smaller fractions of 1L at most). Tiomen Island made a slow start which got him behind in a race where it was difficult to make ground. Switched from the rail to centre track after halfway and made a little progress ((being 3L+ off the lead at halfway) before the sprint started. Probably an ok effort in that context. LOTS would have been a clear second but for Hughes easing him before the line. His excuse would probably be that CTG was starting to lean off the rail towards the line as running into a sharp left hand bend soon after it and the track much narrower than normal. On the other side Hughes has not looked at his sharpest of late and his itenary for the previous 2 days involved getting beaten on Dubawi Gold at the Curragh on Saturday (criticised by Hannon for laying too far back), flying to Singapore to ride Presvis on the Sunday and sitting last in a crawl hen trying to make ground wide and getting nowhere. Then flying back to be at WDSR. This looked like a tired ride whereas Fortune on the winner seemed much more confident and ready for the day. Trainer Balding had named CTGreat as a horse to follow and noted he had not seen one improve as muh from the yearling sale to 2yo. He used the phrases 'slightly dip-back' & 'ponified' about his yearling appearance and you wonder how he cost 30k on that. Interviewed after the race he said someone had asked him before the race whether CTG could run as good as he looked. He had said yes but he needed to do it at the racecourse. Said he had shown in this race what they had seen at home. Head appeared to go in the air at ASCT on debut when nothing happened when asked for an effort 2F out. The high head carriage seems just to be how he holds himself because he showed it here and a strong finish. Trainer said he would go to Royal Ascot and they had not decided whether for the Norfolk or the Windsor Castle. Probably beat three solid Novice to Conditions types here and receiving weight from them. Would seem to fit better in the Windsor Castle on likely Class but how would he fare if taken on in a fast pace rather than allowed to dictate things here? As well as the usual pace in the Ascot races the US trainer Wesley Ward is likely to be back and his runners have turned the 5f races into blitzes in recent years. He has had runners in France preparing and already has 5f winners there with Tiz Terrific, Everyday Dave & Judy The Beauty. Holdin Bullets ran there late last week as well. [UPDATE = Roger Charlton on his website news the day after the race = "Tioman Legend was perhaps a bit disappointing, but on hindsight we did win a very weak race at Lingfield, he was outpaced for most of the race and will be suited by going up in distance to six furlongs next, Royal Ascot is definitely not on the agenda." ] |
