SUMMARY
GGF with watering as 12-16mm applied Sat-Sun. 3mm of Rain on Sunday and 2.5mm on Monday Evening. Going Stick 7.5 reading. Stalls Stands' Side. Strong Wind as a Crosswind from the Right.

George Baker's blog on May 24th = "Place In My Heart our first 2-year-old runner. We never have our 2-year-olds fully wound up for debut, as a progressive experience is a priority. In fact, Excellerator is our only first time out 2-year-old winner. And she proved herself to be a Group filly.... "

Broken Race to a large extent featuring too strong a pace which stretched the field out and meant early fades from many who chased it. Race won by the one horse able to keep someone near the pace in Wolfgang (3L back at halfway and already driven along) who beat the best of the pace pressers. A deeper closer could have won the race but the field effectively split in two before halfway with the first 6 through within 3L of the lead (1st 4 within 1L), the slow starting Split Second at 5L+ and then a gap back to the last 4 spread over 10-25L back of the lead, huge margins. The fact that 3 of the Adrift 4 got to be 4th, 5th & 8th with the first two of those through the worst faders inside the last 1F and would have been past Umph and closing into the leading pair with another 100 yards. Start some of those 6-8L back and any result could have occured because of the pace.

With which, what was trainer George Baker talking about in his blog? Either he is trying to remind himself what he ought to be doing or his sense of self-awareness is zero. George, you do wind your 2yos up for debut. Since you mentioned Excellerator let us take her as Exhibit A. You wound her up for debut and she was sweaty and taut FTO to iron out some moderate fillies at Southwell punted down to a short price. You could have used her demeanour that day in a text book about overwound 2yos for debut, just below the Godolphin paragraph. What is the stuff about ..progressive experience is a priority..? Excellerator ran 15 more times after that debut over 2 years+ and never won again. Your 'Group filly' won an early season Southwell fillies' auction race. Total. Stoutey would weep, Hannon would chuckle & shake his head in a knowing manner. Dascombe might empathise with a young trainer trying to make their name and chasing wins 'now' rather than playing a longer game. She may have been your only 'FTO win' but you have only had FOUR 2yo winners in 3 seasons with 2yo runners during the Turf season. That's 25% FTO SR for your runners capable of winning, son, and you are ridiculously high on the FTO list. Your own fault, you started with the making daft statistical statements on very small smaple sizes.

Then, let us turn to your other three 2yo winners. Chicita Banana ran in the Brocklesby and was fully fit and fought like a tiger in a 6-way pace war that only Archers Road survived in any meaningful way. No sitting well back and letting her have an 'educational intro'. She won STO (from a filly who is still running as a maiden rated OR40ish) and retired at the end of her 2yo season with no other win. You managed to give Vested Interest a 'hidden' debut although on the basis you were looking to wind him up to win a Seller STO along with a punt. That was it for his 2yo season and he has only ever run twice since. Your other winner perhaps suggests you are learning a bit but Belgian Bill was second on debut and only the high class Excelebration (3yo Group winner) stopped him winning. Did not suggest he was underdone FTO. But, he has managed to win again on his 3yo debut so a bit of progression.

But, with that background Place In My Heart was top of the list for strong debuts. Made more so by the fact that the earliest debuts are the competitive ones and this looked an open race. If PIMH was not wound up for this debut then if Baker ever does wind one up it would probably explode on the way to the start. PIMH another wound-up ready debut and fought the jockey for 1.5f before pulling herself into the lead after 2f and upping a pace that already had the field stretching out. On the plus side she then fought on well after cracking Umph (not difficult) and responded to Wolfgang. But, how much 'progressiveness' there or was this the peak to bounce back off?

Wolfgang declared for a seller but then a NR and presumably tactical and he had shown enough to make a go in Auction company worthwhile. Struggled to go the pace here but able to keep close enough to pick up the pieces when the race fell apart. Still going forward at the finish so perhaps stay a but further but not Open Maiden class and might yet be offloaded.

Umph does not stay 5f but on a faster track here and able to race prominently so an each-way type. Broke best and 1-2L clear early and the nous giving him an advantage. But, would have needed to be left alone to stay 5f and taken on by Bertorella and then headed after 2f by the free-running PIMH. With that pressure added unable to see the race out and fading back to the others in the last 1f. Might win something through persistence if he stays 5f later.

Difficult race to judge low level promise in because of the broken nature and the upside-down look to the 4th+. How much promise did GRider & EJean show in being 10L & 14L adrift at halfway and then getting into the faders shelled out of the leading group without getting anywhere near the 1st 2 home? Suspect place in that sense although EJ probably lower OR60s usable.

A bit more interest in the fillies who improved from lost debuts to press the pace here. Mount Mcleod talked up a bit by her trainer as a zippy one but a peculiar sort of part packing it in FTO. Better here and showed the pace to run in the leading line, on her own stands' side then crossing over to the group. Still 4th towards the last 0.5f and the fade hid the promise. Interesting NTO in the right set-up. Bertorella clueless on debut but ridden by Kingscote here who got her out of the stalls slickly and persisted to make her run front rank. Struggling after halfway so limited promise but a minor excuse running prominently and the trainer tends to place this type well. Fanrouge a filly for a trainer who manages to find at least one filly to win each season. Slow starting in cutting up Fast On and then making an effort to race within 2.5L of the lead at halfway. See how she develops.

Split Second a slow start and looking small and a bit slow in this tear-up and this not the sort of FTO win that Channon gets and a poor favourite. Lady Victory showed how they can improve off duff FTos but not one to support on this.

Trainer McMahon seems a more realistic type with his somments and said that Fast On was a straightforward small one and WYSIWYG. No support despite the Fretwell ownership. Despite the 'straightforward' tag he had a blanket for the stalls then reacted to Fanrouge carrying him RH early by sticking his head up and failing to get going. 18L adrift of the lead and halfway and getting into the faders late on without showing much. Trainer will develop him but presume just a nursery type and the Market will be informative NTO.

[UPDATE = Baker's Blog on May 25th = "Our first 2-year-old runner of the season. Place In My Heart, a Whitsbury home-bred daughter of Compton Place. Fast away from the stalls. Always handy. Perhaps a little too handy for choice as she never had anything but 'daylight' to aim at. Mugged close home by the experienced Hannon trained Wolfgang. Beaten a neck. A lovely introduction. A perfect ride from Martin Dwyer. Very pleasing. Especially as this gives us an early barometer as to where we are with the other 2-year-olds. 25 other 2-year-olds at home. Some, clearly, more backward types who won't be out until the backend. But enough precocity about the place to give us hope that we have a nice bunch. On pedigrees and looks, by far the best (and most, numerically) bunch we have trained...."]
