SUMMARY
Good going with Watering as 4mm applied each night Mon-Fri of previous week. 1mm of rain in the previous 24 hours. Going Stick at 8.7 reading. Stalls Stands' Side. Very Strong Wind (gusts up to 30mph) as a Crosswind from the left.

Mixed pace race which seemed to give a lot of the jockeys real problems in the last 2F. PDL touted as useful and there seemed a lot of the 'whatever you do, do not finish too close to that effing thing...' impacting on the jockey's decisions. Initially the jockeys on the others seemed to have things going their way with PDL, accompanied by Dicky Mint, getting to the lead from the widest two draws and setting a solid pace and crossing over in front of the field after 1.5F. A gap of 2.5L back to PBC towards halfway and the others spread over 3-9L and happy they could let PDL sail clear. But, as ever with Spencer, PDL had his head held high and to the right and started hanging from before 2F out. Possibly partly due to the wind blowing him across. But, Spencer looks like this so often on 2yos that you think what he is doing has some effect. Standing up too high in the saddle and holding his hands and the reins away from the horse. Go back to 2010 and he won on a Tate trained Breathless Storm here but again doing the 'anaconda wrestling' bit. You would love to see what would happen if you ran the race again with a smaller, tighter sitting, jockey like de Sousa on and see whether things looked as bad. Anyway, the hanging meant the pace slackened and the others started to close up and the jockeys now had problems. How to finish a long way behind PDL with Spencer wrestling him back into your lap? Which meant, unless the wind was more problematic than thought, a lot of acting, inactivity, 'rocking horse riding' and the like and hard to judge what some are actually capable of.

Trainer Tate gets regular FTO winners and the SPs have got shorter of late (11/2 & 5/1 in 2009-10 after 20/1+ typical before) and this sort of short SP untypical. Jockey Spencer interviewed afterwards and gave some insight. Saying that trainer Tate is never confident but had been unusually sure about this one and that had surprised Spencer. Bigger type if not the most athletic and very fit for the day. Won comfortably despite the hanging but with the the opposition largely inert. Trainer typically terse afterwards and non-committal about targets.

Dicky Mint a York debut for his trainer and often indicates a usable one. Given an easy time and allowed to drift back early FTO but a solid physical type. Able to make mostly smooth progresss to attend PDL for most of the race if a slightly smaller size. Not quite able to match his effort but always clear of the others. Ought to be real OR70+.

Trainer Fahey had said about PBCrag that he was ready 2yo type who needed to be running early. Did not because of sore shins and the trainer had said he hoped they had not 'missed the boat' with him. Physical type matched that and notably smaller than the first two, Very ready for the day and mostly competent. Rolled about a bit inside 2f out and got to a volunteer 3rd late on from 5th by his jockey not restraining as much as the others. Not really Open Maiden type and Fahey probably has his work on.

Come Hither in the partnership's 2nd colours but with Fallon on. Anonymous from a wide draw FTO and perhaps usable 60s. Slower start again here but got back into it and Fallon did nothing in the last 2F and probably would have held up the enthusiastic filly if he could have. Probably usable at her level. Partnership's other horse - Duke Of Aricabeau much more expensive and bigger than CH. Slow start but also got back into it. Jockey did absolutely nothing in the last 2f and left the impression he can improve notably.

A good question would be how a smaller, 66/1, filly like Ave Sofia got from being 10th through halfway to be 3rd inside the last 2F and did best in bridging the gap to the first two until fading back late on? The only one of the 'ruck' who really went for it would be the cynical answer. Trainer has few 2yos but he prepares for debut quite well and the odd one with ability usually shows it FTO including a 50/1 FTO win. Has a believable pedigree to be an OR60s usable type but probably less scope than some in the cast here.

Difficult to judge the promise elsewhere, or overall, given the race shape but Grippa must be better than the final 2F wffort he showed here. Going ok 2F out and then got unbalanced. Track.

[UPDATE = Ann Duffield on her blog the day after the race = "Beecheys Beauty ran an improved race today at Ripon and was only beaten about five lengths. The race looked warm and, according to Paul Mulrennan rode 'like a nice race'. There are sure to be plenty of winners out of the race, and Beecheys Beauty will be one of them. He was a bit naughty at the start, whipping round behind the stalls so Paul landed ahead of him, on his feet - holding the reins." ]
