SUMMARY
Beverley a RH course so Draw Numbering has flipped over for the 5f Chute Races since March 30th. Stall 1 now next to far rail. Historically the Far Rail has been thought of a real advantage with the 5f course uphill around a RH dogleg and with the hill falling away to centre track so that runners drawn there start lower down the hill as well. 5 years ago this would have meant 15 runners handicaps with the first four home having double figure draws (i.e. closest to the far rail before the renumbering. But, the bias was so obvious (bad) that the racecourse has tried to reduce it's affect with course preparation. In one, abortive, attempt they shifted the stalls wider and stalls 1 won from stall 2 running up the joggers' path on the stands' rail so they canned that idea. But, something has changed in the last 2-3 seasons and the effect is less and can appear to be missing in some 2yo maiden races with a wide spread of abilities (different race dynamics to a tight handicap of closely matched old lags). In many races the fields have raced off the Far Rail more towards centre track for large parts of the race.

In 2010 there were 20 x 5f races for 2yos at the track and they were won by stalls ranging from 15 (1 off the rail in a 16 rnr race) to 1 (by better quality types in 10 & 7 runner races). Looking at the 16 x 8+ runner races in 2010 you would say that better types, in context can win from wide draws in 8-10 runner races. When the field size was 11-17 the far rail area draw seemed to be more of an advantage. The double figure draws to win were drawn 15 of 16 runners, 12 of 13, 12 of 12, 10 of 10, 10 of 11. The 17 runner seller run at the course was won by stall 6 as the leaders faded badly (pace can always break up the far rail runners in later race if they go too hard). But, looking at the winners in 2010 nearly all look to be the best horse in the race on the day (with hindsight) however the race played out in terms of pace and track position.

10 of the 16 x 8+ runner races were won by horses in the first three at Halfway from whatever draws (an indicator of how relative quality in mixed groups of 2yos matters more than straight draw, an OR55 horse drawn well still isn't going to be able to compete with an OR80 horse drawn in centre track if they are both competent). Another two were won by those in 4-5th range. 9 of the 16 winners were within 1L of the lead at halfway, another two within 1.5L and the horse in 5th at 3L. The other four winners from further back at halfway were in big field of 12-17 runners and most had strong paces. The 4 winners were 4.5-8L off the lead at halfway and were able to win as the pacemakers faded. The winners were 7th, 9th, 10th & 14th at halfway. Essentially two race types at the course. In one the better horses get away together as a group (from whatever draw) and fight it out with the draw perhaps making a difference between them. In big fields the pace pressure from lots of enthusiasts going for it can lead to an overly strong pace and winners coming from midfield 4-8L back at halfway.

Auction for those costing £19k or less up to June 30th, 2010 or less than £22k for later sale. 2lb allowance for each £5.5k below £22k (£3k added to early sales). Allowances = under £16.5k 3lbs, under £11k 5lbs, under £5.5k 7lbs.
