SUMMARY
GF with watering but not deatails given other than the watering continued up to noon on the day. Going Stick 8.9 on Monday but check for UPDATE. Medium Breeze as a Crosswind from the left.

Race Downgraded from Listed level for 2011. To retain Listed status a Fillies race for 2yos must achieve a Pattern Race Rating above OR90 for a 3-year period. The PRR is produced by averaging the Annual Race Rating. The ARR is produced by averaging the ORs, as agreed by the WSRC, of the first four horses home in that year. The ARRs for 2008-10 for the Hilary Needler have been 93.25 (ok), 77.25 (bad) & 74.0 (terrible) to produce a PRR of 81.5 for 2008-10 and a huge 8.5 short of the 90.0 average required. Which means, in ridiculous 'Black Type' rankings, the winners of the last two Hilary Needlers (not even strong nursery standard) are as 'worthy' as Frankel. Well done everybody. Go away and fix this nonsense ASAP and stop Bloodstock Types making the World look foolish. Worth noting that the Hilary Needler's demise seems to have been helped by the creation of the Marygate at York in mid-May, out of nowhere, and for no good reason. [Also worth noting that the summary by the TV Pundit on the Day of why the Race had been downgraded was totally wrong. He announced the reason as being 'The median of the race winners' without specifying the duration. It isn't the Median and it is of the FIRST FOUR and not the winners over a three year period. Worse than Pointless Punditry and just passing on garbage information. The Clerk of the Course in interview had given him the hint by noting how the 'placed horses' had let the race ratings down especially. She also noted that the race had fallen below the accepted 3-year average either last year or two years ago and had been given some leeway before being downgraded because it was a 'Nationally known Ascot trial'. The Pattern Race Committtee have a raft of rules and notes they can look through to justify all sorts of wangling if they feel the urge. The Pundit expected the race to get back to Listed Status quickly after this renewal. The PRR of 2009-10 is 75.6 and the three year average has to get back over 90 to be considered. If this group (and the 'right' four fillies finished clear) managed an ARR above 90 it would be a start but if they managed a terrific ARR of 95 it would get the three year PRR back to around 82. The race needs three good years to have any chance. ]

Van Go Go Claimed by Paul Dixon LTO and moved to his trainer David Nicholls. But ran here in the Andrew Black colours of her original owner/breeder for whom she had run in the claimer. Presumably Mr Black has bought the horse back privately but after being claimed a horse cannot go back to it's original trainer (to stop people fiddling).

Interesting Race Shape with Vocational setting a too Strong pace overall but ensuring a proper test and breaking the lesser fillies. Dozy a solid winner but helped by the other three better fillies having to overcome problems of come sort. In a race with a stiff pace Dozy able to make a clean start and then held to race midfield (just over 4L off the lead at halfway) and in the right place to pick up the lead as Vocational stalled. Vocational ran very well considering the issues. Broke left handed from a wide draw and gave away ground. Then pressed on with Dettori to make the ground back quickly then force on to the lead and XF after 1F and a full 1.5L clear. Kept going very well after headed and clearly can do better with a more settled and professional run. The other two better fillies both made slow starts which had them well back from early on and starting their efforts 2F out from 2-3L behind the winner and making a little ground on her by the line although being beaten. Lily's Angel already had three sloppy starts to her name despite 3 wins and only won the Lily Agnes LTO from 8th through halfway assisted by the lack of quality of the opposition. Even worse here and leant on the side of the stalls and fell out of the stalls then took time to get going. In previous races she has either been able to sit close enough to pick off the leader with a late race effort or win with an extended effort. Here she was too far back and had to use a lot of her effort to close the gap back to Vocational sticking at it and Dozy making her kick from the ideal position. But, still going forward at the line and another with more to show if she could cut out the early sloppiness. But, took a bit of time to get going inside 2F out and perhaps she is getting generally sloppy. Queen's Revenge made a very poor start on debut and similar here but not entirely her own fault. Broke a little slowly from the widest stall then carried left handed by Vocational hanging left and left well down the clope in last. Lacked the zip to get back to the group as readily as Vocational and more than 6L off the lead at halfway. Raced centre track and a more immediate effor than LAngel to start making ground back to the leading pair. Perhpas stalled a little late on or perhaps LA staying on strongly and lost 3rd to her late on. Pleasing for the overall quality of the race to see the three lesser fillies that tried to chase Vocational in 2nd-4th through halfway broken by the effort and fading early and 7L back from the better fillies to TTG in 5th. TTG hauled back to last and effectively ridden to try to pick up the pieces by trundling on late and no real promise..

[UPDATE = Fahey two days after the run on his Sporting Life blog = "Lily's Angel finished third in the Hilary Needler at Beverley on Wednesday night and seems to be getting something of an aversion to the stalls. We'll try her in a rug next time and we know she wants six furlongs now, so once she missed the kick at Beverley that was that. It was a good little race though and we weren't totally disappointed by her run. She'll probably go to Royal Ascot for the Albany Stakes now."]
