GF going with watering but no details given. The 16f race at the meeting abandoned and only running races on the straight track. This said to be done to preserve water supplies by no watering the whole track. Going Stick at 8.4 (MONDAY = Check UPDATE). Stalls Stands' Side. Very Strong Wind as a Three-quarter Tailwind from the right. Tom Dascombe on a small message service 5 hours before the race - "If we beat the yank horse today then I promise to show my Bear Behind in the winners' enclosure!!" Gentlemans Code one of a team of 2yos that US trainer Wesley Ward has in training in France as preparation for Royal Ascot. GC had already run in the US finishing 2nd FTO at Belmont Park on a Muddy Dirt track over 5f beaten 2.5L as the 3/4 favourite. US jockey Mike Smith here to ride as part of familiarising himself with British racing before Royal Ascot. He said he found the undulating course rode differently to what he was expecting from walking it. Said the horse was probably a 5f type on how he rode here. GC a Shorter, strong barrel sprinter and fitting with that view. Able to set an unhassled lead and the jockey said he was better when BB was accompanying him. He started looking around and going forward less well once 1L+ clear later on. But a comfortable win. Faster time but not a strong pace race and with the very strong tailwind a tear-up could have produced a much faster time. Good debut from Bear Behind and a bigger type than the typical on for his sire and a bit more range. A little green at times through the race but able to travel ok with the winner and produce a challenge as that one idled in front. Ought to be Open maiden class on this and ok to follow. |
