SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

GGF going with 6.4mm of rain the previous day. Going Stick 7.4 reading. Medium Breeze as a Half Tailwind from the right. Stalls on Stands' Side.

Hannon on his Website the day before the race = "...We are just starting to bring out our second batch of two-year-olds and have some interesting ones making their debut, ..... We run a nice ...filly ...Damask in the opener at Newmarket. ...She is a beautiful filly who has done everything right at home and has really progressed this past month, so we are looking to get her started. We also run Roedean in the race..... who completely blew the start on her debut at Windsor but showed enough in the second half of the race to suggest that she is alright."

Highclere TB website notes about Damask = "Latest update 21st May = Damask has been given two provisional entries on Friday 27th May at Haydock and Newmarket. The filly will work tomorrow morning and a decision will be made afterwards as to whether she is ready to make her debut.... Update 13th May = Damask continues to make excellent progress - her shins are now much improved and she is strengthening up all the time. She did her first half speed piece of work yesterday and showed a really good attitude, as well as striding out well. Richard would like Richard Hughes to sit on her next week to ascertain whether the filly is ready to move into faster work."

Brian Meehan on his website about Good Clodora = "She needed her first run and will probably be better when she can race at seven furlongs. Might still need this run."

Barry Hills on website news for w/b May 23rd - "If the ground eases Friday could be a busy day as we have lots of entries. At Newmarket two nice fillies Self Centered and Stellar Express are entered in the 6f fillies maiden"

Consider Centre track bias - Race did not seem to play out in a sensible manner. Fillies spread wide from Stands' rail to Centre track. As the Draws of the first 6 would, mostly, suggest there seemed a bias in favour of those racing Centre trrack. The first three home were the three widest out from halfway to home and the winner raced widest. A 25/1 FTO winner for Noseda untypical in the last 5 seasons, especially at this time of the season when the competitive 2yos should be starting. Roedean drawn high but ended up making progress to a volunteer fourth widest of the Stands' side runners. Possible that the 6 racing closest to the rail were just lesser types and/or performances and the 'bias' a coincidence. But hard to believe that some conbination of Damask, Elusive Flame & My Propeller should not have finished closer if not involved to win. They were well beaten and fading earlier than you would expect with the 'Centre' group rolling forward as a group and the 'Stands' side folding together as if the two groups not connected by a similar track. Clerk Of Course interviewed before racing and typically prickly about any bias and defending his watering before asked. He did point out they had been doing a lot of watering in high winds...

Looking at the later races the following 6f handicap was won by Stall 1 from 2 with the first 6 home including 5 of the 6 lowest draw and those racing centre track doing best again. Those staying stands' side being driven along by halfway to try to keep up with the centre group. More of the better fancied runners in the handicap drawn centre so still perhaps a niggle. The fourth race a large field handicap over 7f and the jockeys and the connections had clearly decided the stands' side was a go-slow area to be avoided. Things got a bit odder with a breakaway trio of wide draws going across to the far rail to set a stiff pace there and they produced the first two home. The whole field on the centre line or wider by halfway and still the wider the group was the better they did overall. A Bias but at least it varied consistently across the whole width..

[UPDATE = Noseda quaoted on his Website News 28th May = "It’s a nice surprise but not a 25/1 surprise. We did think she’d be in the shake-up but thought perhaps that she hadn’t quite done enough work to win first time. But she was utterly professional and has done it well. We shall see how she comes out of this but may go brave and will think about Royal Ascot." ]

{UPDATE = Highclere TB website report = "Damask ran very well on her debut at Newmarket before getting tired during the final part of the race. She broke reasonably well and soon took up a prominent position on the rail. She travelled really well through the race, showing no apparent signs of greenness and looked sure to be in the shake up. About 2½ furlongs from home, Richard Hughes asked the filly to quicken and she responded well, but it was clear that the other horses in the middle of the track had already gained a distinct advantage and were several lengths up on her. Damask could not sustain her challenge and Richard gave her a very easy time inside the final furlong." ]
