GFG going with 5mm of watering the day before. Going Stick at 7.9 reading. Strong Breeze mostly a Headwind. Fahey on his Sporting Life blog the day before the race = "Gabrial is a horse I like a lot and he runs at Beverley. He's come on a ton for his Chester win, Beverley will suit him more than that track did and I hope he wins here and then we might have a look at Royal Ascot. He's a decent horse and whatever beats him will win." Average pace at most and little change overall in the 2F sprint with racing closer to the rail an advantage. Just over 2L from leader to 5th at halfway and just under 2L from 1st to 5th home at the line. Cravat able to control the race on the rail and make a solid effort and set a target for the others. Ran better able to race settled at a pace comfortable to him having faded at YORK when competing to lead in a faster paced race with more pressure. Gabrial the only horse to make places and a pretty good effort to get from 1.5L back on the rail to win by 0.5L given the shape of the race. Still looks a bit green and a sloppy start but still learning. Hamza another to make a sloppy break and race a little freely in the leading pair. Unusual effort by the jockey who sat still inside the last 2F while the others made their kicks and got going earlier. Almost as if trying to let the horse's natural pace win. Jockey panicked a bit when this was clearly not working having dropped to being challenged for 3rd and hanging left 0.5f out. Did better persisting off a strong pace LTO. Arnold Lane niggled along at times on debut and a worry before this race whether he was fast enough for 5f. Raced widest throughout the race with no cover and only the 3rd or 4th best effort at 2F out. Plugging on ok in the sprint late on and the 'Fast 5f' question still there. Mitchum another looking the wrong way when the gates opened and a sloppy start. Able to get back to the group comfortably given the ordinary pace. A bit green at 2F and lost touch with the leading 4 a little. But closing back into them late on so not out of place and can still improve nous and might be more of a stayer. Showed a knee action FTO at SWEL but ok here on an uphill 5f if lacking the immediate kick of the best here. |
