GGF going with 6.4mm of rain on Thursday and 2mm on Friday. Showers expected in the morning before racing. Going Stick at 7.9 reading having been 7.4 the day before. Stalls .....? . Strong Wind as a Half Tailwind from the right. Hannon on his website new the day before = "we run Democretes, who will sharper for his debut at Newmarket. He is a lovely colt, who comes from the same family as Rag Top. We have had most of the family here, so he was always a target of ours at the sales, and we like him." Meehan on his website about All Nighter = "He has made natural improvement from his promising first run at Newbury in a maiden that is already working out very well. Newmarket maidens are often very competitive but we think he is in the right place here & Sandbetweenyourtoes - Nice horse who goes really well but will probably need the experience." Michael Bell on his website news for May 25th wrt gallops done by Sovereign Debt with Exceedexpectations & Operation Tracer. = ...looks like he is developing into a nice horse and he went well under Jamie Spencer and he was watched by his owner.. Very messy race and Very Suspect form to read Literally. Previous day's racing had suggested the ground got fast as you went from Stands' Rail to Far Rail. This the 5th race of the day and earlier results had not confirmed this still the case after a drying 26hrs and faster going. First race of day won by Lone Stands' Rail runner (possibly just plain miles better). Second race most of field went to Stands' rail and the pair running the Far rail as a separate group produced the winner. Field in next race eschewed any decision and went up the centre strip together. Nobody gets blamed then. Which meant with a big field of 2yos here and probably harder to predict how many groups there would be and where anyone would run than the winner. Jockey Hughes (Mr got-to-hold-them-up-to-win) saw early that there was confusion over where to run and no-one pressing on. He took the decision to go to the lead on Democretes and cross to the Stands' Rail. Once there he was able to slow the pace up and turn the race into a less than 2F sprint. Difficult to make places and the halfway positions to final placing should be read in that light. Not enough pace in race to spread the field out properly and a bunch finish with the abilities mixed to some degree. Swiss Spirit talked up as the best physical type from a mare who has produced a Group winner, a horse placed in a soft Coventry and 2 x OR80+ sprinters in 4 previous foals. Given a poor ride by Fallon and should have won. Got 2R on the rail behind the winner and if he had stayed there would have got a choice of Gaps to make his strong effort and win. Instead Fallon panicked a bit and started moving right to find a gap by 2.5F out. He spent the whole time from then until inside the last 1F switching right in stages and eventually carving Casa Bex up to make his final effort in centre track. Strong finish to almost catch the leader he had been just behind at the start of this process but now wide spread on the track. Jk Barzalona on Genius Step had won the first two races of the day on opposite sides of the track and showed Fallon here what sticking to the rail would have done. GStep behind the winner & runner-up in a stack on the rail 2.5f out and not pick up as well as either because green. But then able to make his ground along the open rail as the field had spread out. Three widest drawn horses with previous runs probably better off to have belted down the Far Rail together and see what happened. Instead RG, Allnighter & CBex Jks got indecisive and lost tabs on the easy leader on the Stands' side. RG held in the stalls and then started bucking as the jockey tried to hold him. Ending up racing wide on the Stands Side group and over-raing. Smaller type though and overpowered a bit by the better types like SSpirit for an effort. Allnighter had run well at NWBY FTO when get a slick start and racing prominently. Hauled back here in a slow race then caught up racing wide of the group in centre track. An entriely different Run Style and trip and ran less well. Interesting to note that the other Meehan runner, apparently with the second jockey but for the Landlord Sangsters, did what Allnighter did FTO. Pinged the stalls and got prominent in a slow race so ran just fine. |
