Outer Course in use with Stalls Centre track. GFG going with watering as 15mm Tues with 14.2mm rain Sun-Thur with drizzle at times Fri-Sat. Going Stick 7.7 reading on FRIDAYand gone to 8.2 by 11:00am Sat but no later number. Dry and breezy in the 27 hours since the Sat reading. Stiff to Strong Breeze (with stronger gusts) as a Direct Headwind. Race meeting started with 3 x 5F races and there appeared to be a bit of Magic Carpet down the Stands' rail. The two handicaps that followed this race both won by the prominent racer that ran the rail. Stalls Centre but Beau Mistral lead this group over to the Stands Rail and the first three home raced close to the rail with DA in Lane 1 and BH behind BM on the rail. Others raced wider with Fallon on CGarden racing alone more towards the centre and completely fading by 1.5F out. BM set a solid pace near the rail and a typically early kick from de Sousa by halfway to stretch the pace and drop the wider racers. LNickandy able to get to volunteer 4th out of the rear by racing closest to the rail. DA took 1F to et to BM and finally got past her 0.5F out as that one started to stall. Stalling herself close to the line but able to hang on. Typical bit of indecision and lack of foresight from a Hills twin on BH and got trapped on the rail behind the pair of fillies 2F to 1F out. Switched left off the Carpet and started hanging but an ok effort and might have won with a bit more distance to run. Either needed to take action earlier or not have allowed the leaders to cut across him after 1F. A finish between three similar OR67-73 types who would normally be vulnerable to an OR75+Open Maiden type but none here. Field cut up badly from a strongish set of entries and a lack of bigger stables involved (Tariff?). Trainer Given finally produced a 5f debut although he said Finbar might have gone for an earlier race and then perhaps wait for a 6f race but had run here because it was close enough to his yard and he wanted to get him started. Trainer used to get strong debuts from his early 5f types and odd FTO wins but no success FTO since 2007 and no strong debut since 2009. First debut this year very green and similar with Finbar. Losing ground at the start, running too freely then hanging badly when asked to make an effort 2F out. Also, not fit enough as a bigger type by Nayef. Sire gets rare 5F winners although the dam adds a fair bit of zip. Bigger type and has the scope to develop so the one horse behind to track. One point of Pundit interest. After the race the RUK tame pundit said that Dark Ages should be ok for nurseries rather than going higher (ok comment). Then said he would expect her to get OR65-69 when the nurseries started. A positive to him for using NUMBERS rather than the word 'Nice' tacked on to another word. But, DAges has finished 3rd in a Newmarket maiden, given a subsequent Listed winner a bit of a race STO while clear of the others and has won an Open Maiden. The BHA's handicapper starting point is going to be OR75 and no surprise to see it 2-5 points higher. The BHA guy does not publish his ratings when the nurseries start but she is going to be on something like 77-8 surely? Whether she is that level in Physical terms is then Paddock Review game. |
