SUMMARY
£10k Yearling Bonus Race.

Stalls on Stands' Rail but Ripon a RH course so Draw numbering flipped over. Stall 8 on the Stands' Rail in this race and 1 towards centre track. In big field races where the field splits it will now be the lower numbers that go to race towards the Far (inside) rail. Medium breeze as a three-quarter headwind from the left (over the stands)

A race featuring one of the most notably trainer trends. Trainer Tim Easterby gets very few FTO winners and ignoring all his debuts a good OSFA call. BUT, this race the exception and he has targetted winning it for, at least 15 years. Back in 1998 he won with a debut runner in Pipalong (useful 2yo & older Group 1 sprinter) and in 2000 with Romantic Myth (Queen Mary victress at 2yo). Lack of placed runner in race 2002-4 an indicator of the relative slump the stable went through. His record since then is 2nd in 2005 with Lyndalee (11/1) followed by wins in 2006 with Kerrys Dream (10/1), 2007 with Cristal Clear (12/1), 2008 with Group class Anglezarke (100/30) & 2010 with Cocktail Charlie (100/30, and the only male amongst the fillies). Only 3rd in 2009 with a moderate filly and you presume Little Scotland missed the race for some reason.

Halfway positions to final help to tell the story of the race which had 5 fillies in (QR the most substantial, 3 x smaller ones, plus the tiny No Legs (& perhaps explains why she has not been sold despite her full siblings). The three smaller fillies took off together to form a pressing pace along with the bulkier colt Alejandro who always travelled best amongst the smaller girls. Those that were 5th-8th at Halfway there for different reasons. Topcoat a lengthier type and off a Johnston prep for debut always likely to find this sort of tear-up a bit of a culture shock. Added getting a bit unbalanced at times to the lack of nous and zip. KKing a smaller, compact sprint type and with a bit of depth and bulk so might have had less problem with the speed. But, green at the start and look unbalanced for much of the race on a course notable for not suiting some horses because of the undulations.
QRevenge lost 4L standing in the stalls and then a bit more taking time to get going. The jockey then did the right thing in dropping her towards the rail and letting her get organised rather than scrubbing her along to chase the stiff pace. She was 6L off the leader at halfway but going comfortably and the leading group's pace threatened to break that line up before the finish so still in with a chance if they did. No Legs a bit green but seemed to be basically too small and underpowered to go with the others.

The leading 4 at halfway saw two of the smaller fillies fading inside 2f out (RS) and stalling by 1f out (PB). Alejandro left in lead and able to raise a solid effort 1.5f out and AB able to go with him (fulfilling a little of the morning support for her) before fading badly in the last half furlong (lasting longer than the trainer's rep in the race in 2010). The two unbalanced colts fading notably as well.

QR able to make progress on the leading pair inside the last 2f showing more ability than just making ground on tiring runners. Short of room 1f out but then engaged Alejandro as AB dropped away and the pair duelled to the line pulling clear away from the faders.
