SUMMARY
GFG Going with 3mm of Watering on Weds & 2mm Thur am. Going Stick at 8.5 at Noon Weds = [Update] = 8.7 by 15:30 on Thurs. Medium Breeze as a Full Tailwind.

Hannon on his website = "... Marcus Augustus, who was staying on well when second at Salisbury on his debut, should appreciate the uphill finish in the opening maiden"

Race played out like an average pace with a sprint from inside 2F out. The two horses to make most places were the winner and Faraway (never in the race and just plugging on late to a Volunteer fifth). These two both running the Far Rail strip and hints that the rail strip was some sort of advantage. Winner of the following handicap made all down the rail. The way both races played out suggested faster conditions and that the Tailwind a real factor in aiding the runners to finish the races off.

I'm Still The Man an unusual 5f debut winner for Turner given that the normally has his best 5f 2yos (and he thinks they are all 5f to a larger degree) out in the first few races of the season. BUT, this a special circumstance with ISTM having not reached his reserve at the Doncaster Breeze Up sales on April 20th then been sold at the new Brightwells Breeze-up Sale (Ascot Racecourse) on May 7th. So most of the pre-work had been done and this an 'early season' debut for Turner in effect. Solid size in the group and another example of the value available at the sales with the depressed Market. Jockey made a good decision before 2F out to stoke his horse up and get him going forward. Jockey on the leader and the pair attending her all trying to delay their effort into the last 2F which meant ISTM got the jump on them into the last 2F and running the rail. Not far over OR70.

Marcus Augustus got going late over a fast 5f on debut and the Hannon's seemed to be hoping for a 'staying' 5f here given the uphill track. But with a slower pace and a tailwind the race developed into a sprint and MA looked ill-suited to that and especially when running in mid-rack. Unable to raise a kick to separate himself inside 2F out and got to clear second by sticking at it best late on. Presume he will be up to 6f NTO.

'Promise' from the others needs to be read in the light of the race shape. Faraway is presumably a lesser type (says OR60s) being prepared for his Nursery unwrapping 4TO. CN sweating in prelims and ran a bit too freely in front and faded. Clarkson seemed ill-suited to the race type but lef tthe impression he has a bit more scope so one to track.
