GFG going with watering but no details given. Going Stick reading at 8.2 at 9:30 am for an evening meeting with a very warm day forecast. Stiff Breeze as a Three-Quarter Tailwind from the right. Hannon on his website = "We run two two-year-olds down at Goodwood, Coupe de Ville (Hughes) and Chandlery (Dobbs). Both are making their debut and we like them. Coupe de Ville carries his head a little bit high, but we have discovered that a lot of the Clodovil progeny tend to do that, and he has been working well. He might be a shade more ready than Chandlery, though he, too, is a lovely big colt who is giving all the right signals and will make his mark in time." You have to take anything Hannon runs at GDWD seriously and they target some of their best at the maidens here. In 2010 they won 13 of 32 juvenile races here across the whole season and lots of the better types ran here. This first and second meant they have won 4 of the 7 juvenile races at the course so far in 2011 and had runners beaten in photos to finish 2nd in the two other races they have participated in. Their male runners in the maidens have been Crown Dependency (good winner and clearly OR90+), Airborne Again (won STO), Trumpet Major, North Star Boy (won STO at ASCT). To which you can add another pair of taking 'big lads' with Chandlery & Coup De Ville. A lot of better races to be won with that group by season end. Despite being touted as 'more ready' CDV clueless at the start then, typically, Hughes took a bit of time to get him organised and settled to Stalk&Pounce. A very good effort to get to challenege and if he did race with his head down he might have won the photo. Chandlery as tall as CDV and heavier build and looked like he needed the race. Seemed to help convince Edensor he didn't like this racing game by leaning all over him at the break and intimidating him. Another advert for how jockey Dobbs solves problems quietly and allowed Chandlery to pull to front rank but then sit with the leader and an accommodation between horse & jockey reached and he raced settled sfter that. You would imagine Hughes fighting him a bit more to sit 2R. More professional and better placed for the final efforts than CDV so able to respond as that one challenged him. A taking pair and both can compete well at higher level. [UPDATE = Hannon quoted on his website = "Richard Hannon is eager to retain the Dick Hern award as leading trainer at Goodwood this season, and he boosted his chances of doing just that when landing a treble on the Sussex course on Friday night. The boss always loves to introduce some of his better two-year-olds on this track, and clearly there is a big future ahead for both Chandlery and Coup de Ville, who finished one-two in the maiden. Pat Dobbs rode the Julie Wood-owned Chandlery, with Richard Hughes opting for Coup de Ville, but the boss said: 'The pair are both housed up at Everleigh and Hughesie hadn't ridden either at home, so he was a bit in the dark. I thought he had probably made the right choice as Coup de Ville looked the more forward, but I also knew that Chandlery was a lovely big colt with bags of scope, and, though it was a shame that one of them had to be beaten, we go home knowing that we have two very promising youngsters. Julie had a hat-fitting for Ascot earlier in the week, but Chandlery is unlikely to be among her team for the Royal meeting, with the boss observing:He could be one for Newmarket's July meeting, while we might also keep back Coup de Ville - and possibly our Newbury second Poole Harbour - for a maiden up there.'" ] |
