GF going with watering as 12mm applied on both Mon/Tue. Chance of showers during racing. Going Stick at 8.4 reading. Medium breeze as a Direct Headwind. Ann Duffield on her blog = "At Beverly we run a naughty but nice, filly called Beaumaris, too small to be sent to the sales last year, her owner / breeder kindly sent her here" No Claims Received. Ann Duffield's blog post race = "Before first lot pulled out, our first time out two year old runner Beaumaris had a short three furlong canter before bouncing out of the stalls, ahead of making her racecourse debut at 2pm this afternoon. It's not a rule we abide by, but some horses appreciate the extra session on the day of a race. ....... George and I went to Beverly, not because we thought that was where our best chance of a winner was (even though it turned out to be the case) but, because we hate to miss a two year old, especially on their first trip to the sports. It is, without doubt a very important day for them, and I want be there to witness their attitude and behaviour up close. It tells a trainer a great deal, and is the reason I say " we teach a youngster all it knows up to the day he or she starts racing, after that, the horse teaches us". When Beaumaris and her two friends arrived at Sun Hill, our brief from her owner breeders was "to see what you think, if they cant win, send them home". One filly went home some time ago, but the other two horses stayed, and Beaumaris is our first runner for the well known breeder, Derek Iceton from Limesotne and Tara studs. ......Jumping from the stalls well, she tracked the small field who went at a strong gallop. With two furlongs to race Tom (Eaves) asked her to quicken and, lengthening away from the field, she won by three lengths. It was not a great race but she gave a lot of weight away to the others as she was in to be claimed for the maximum amount. Given the quality of the race, Mr Handicapper is unlikely to be harsh on her, ideally putting her in a position to win a nursery, more improvement could be found by trying her over further too. Sired by Derby winner Sir Percy and out of a Fantastic Light mare it is not unreasonable to expect her to stay further. More over, she was extremely well behaved, which is not always the case at home, and she thoroughly enjoyed her day out." A poor race with the other fillies going too hard and setting the race up for Beaumaris to trundle through to win (or 'lengthening away from the field' in trainerspeak. Not easy to do when you are that small). A lot of duff races in the North but are there really going to be Nurseries that bad? Thinking a bit further the bit in the blog about 'too small to go to the sales' is guff. She did go to the Goffs Orby Yearling sales in Ireland and couldn't even attract the minimum bid. And, another thing, the Time was awful. Why can't trainers speak in Numbers terms rather than the Abstract 'NiceWorld'. Pray silence, whilst we all grin-ourselves-to-death... |
