SUMMARY
GFG going after 2.4mm of rain the previous day on top of unspecified watering. Going Stick 6.7 on Tues 16:00 = UPDATE = 6.4 by Noon on the day. Stalls Centre. Medium Breeze as a Half Headwind from the Left.

Hannon on his website two days before the race = "We run two in the juvenile race at Newbury, Graphic, who is owned by The Royal Ascot Racing Club, and Moustache. The boss added:They are two nice colts. Moustache is by Mujadil and Graphic by Excellent Art, and I will be disappointed if both don't turn out to be decent. They have done everything right so far."

Highclere TB on their website = "Latest update 6th June = Graphic has an entry at Newbury this coming Thursday 9th June. He is in very good form and has progressed nicely in recent weeks but Richard will only want to run him on decent ground so we will have to wait and see whether further rain falls at Newbury. Update 18th May = Graphic is in great form and is now moving up into fast work. All being well, he should be ready to make his debut in two to three weeks time provided that Richard is happy."

Usually a strong maiden although with a wide range of ability on show. Changed from 6f to 6.5F recently. The race overall has produced, at least, one 2yo Group winner in each year 2006-10. 2006 won by Gp3 7f Thousand Words, 2007 saw two divisions with one won by Gp3 7f River Proud and the other by older Grade 1 winner Midships, 2008 won by 7f Gp3 Sri Putra, 2009 a very good edition with Gp1 7f Arcano winning from Gp2 6f Showcasing and in 2010 the Gp3 7f winner Waiter's Dream was in midfield. Field tends to throw up a handful of other winners up to Conditions level and the pace is usually strong enough to spread them mostly by ability at the finish (before considering valid excuses).

Solid pace without being strong but a 2F+ effort at the end seemed to spread the field out pretty fully. If looking for possible Group horses in this field then the first three that pulled clear (plus the NRs) the options. Eastern Sun an untypically competent debut for Gosden and a good winner. Ready type but strongly built. See whether trainer goes Group level NTO or tries a conditions race first. Probably others with more longer term scope in the field.

Another odd ride from Hughes on Moustache as he struggles with the 'Hold Up' problem. Horse got the jump on him and led and the jockey trying to settle him in front. Headed 2f out but jockey let the winner get half a length up on him before asking for the effort late. Solid response until hanging and presume OR90+.

Spiritual Star the most likeable prospect and bigger and rangy. Given a more typical 'Hold Up' raide for a free-runner being settled in midfield. Green when asked for his effort but still responsing well in the last 1f until jampered and eased. Should develop well and compete ok at lower Group level. Trainer's last runner in this maiden was Lord Zenith who finished a promising 7th in a deeper edition. He was unplaced at Gp2 lvel at 2yo and a Listed winner at 3yo. This looks a better type.

Gap back from the Leading three and the Channon pair look borderline Open Maiden types and Tidal Way not a strong Open maiden candidte and perhaps just behind the Changeover point.

More interest in three others ahead of the Channon pair for the future and possibles for Open Maiden winners with excuses here. Acer Diamonds a bigger type and solidly built if a bit raw. Travelling well enough to 2f out but hanging in the last 2f. Has the scope to improve out of the pack if the hanging was just greenery. Rare debut at this better track for trainer who usually starts her better ones at her local NMKT tracks.

Similar story with Graphic who was green but travveling ok tot he last 2f but nothing happened when asked for the effort and the jockey let it go. Obviously with a reliable trainer and is better than the final result says. Nassau Storm the most green and never travelling comfortably because of that and always hassled along. Given that a commendable effort to gather himself to produce an effort to get from 5L+ back at halfway to be up to Tidal's Way's tail to 1F out before fading again and hiding that promise. More substantial than TW.

Worth noting the NRs with Eton Dorney a possible better type with Godolphin trying to send their better types to the 'Top' tracks FTO. 150k Breeze-up purchase and the Video of his breeze on the Tattersalls website is a positive. A good size (unlike many of the Godolphin purchases) and a straight, balanced and fluent mover. Brian Meehan has used the race to introduce Group winners in each of 2009/10 so his two NRs here - Sanad & Archbishop of interest for the future as possible better ones.
