GFG going with 1.4mm of rain on each of Tue/Wed to add to 10mm of watering on each day of Fri/Sat and Mon/Tue. 10mm applied to home stright on Wed. Going Stick at 8.1 on Tues 8:15 = UPDATE = 7.4 by Noon on the day. Stalls Stands' Side on the Outer course. Medium Breeze as a Half Headwind from the right. Highclere TB website about Daunt's training = "Update 26th May = Daunt worked this morning with Richard Hughes on board. He worked with two unraced two-year-olds and Richard sat him in behind before moving him to join the others towards the end of the gallop. He worked very nicely and Richard said he has got an engine but, in his opinion, he would benefit from being given a bit more time before making his racecourse debut. Latest update 3rd June = Daunt could not have looked in better condition at the moment. We watched him canter upsides two others and he stretched out to go with the other two, both of which he did easily and willingly. Richard has therefore decided to make an entry for him at Nottingham on Thursday 9th June but will keep an eye also on the ground conditions before making a decision whether to run." Picture - of the finish of the race. Field raced Centre track or further over to Far Side. Slow looking time despite the clear win (and immediate 'impressive' burbling from the commentator, as ever). 1.52s slower than the following Class 6 handicap won by a 6yo (in form) but running off OR56 and carrying 7lbs more than Sans Loi. Consider whether this winner able to win comfortably from and unready, green, 7f+ development types or just plain moderate. Race seemed to have a slowish pace to halfway until joskey Queally on the Godolphin runner upped the pace a little. Race developed into a 2f sprint with some ugly looking efforts overall. Even the winner offering to crab left in the last 1.5f and not really 'powering' clear' but just making an okish effort away from some wallowing around and fading behind. Some horses to be positive about in the group but not many 6f types probably. Sans Loi in good condition and the readiest package. Trainer McCabe's usable 2yos tend to show it FTO. This the second FTO winner he has had this year with an expensive breeze-up purchase and he runs another tomorrow in a 7f race at SDWN. Typical shape to trainer's debuts so far this year with a number of 5f debuts early with odd usable ones in then a break. Then starting his batch of better 6f+ types into June onwards. Trainer (along with BS agent Malone) seem to buy similar shapes whatever price bracket they are in. The amount of bulk goes up with the price but the height less obviously. Nigel Tinkler always buys the same shape but buys 'Square Boxes' with no length or range to their movement and lacking height. McCabe seems to go for a similar thing but with an improvement. His short ones have some length to their body to use their range. Sans Loi the top price at the new Brightwells (Ascot) 2yo Breeze-up sale in early May. Likeable type in the the longer, low & chunky type. Neatly made and ok mover. Not really tested here and margin of win by default to some extent. Perhaps top out in competing in Conditions level (OR86-92) but should stay further. West Leake Hare by a 5-6f sire but out of a stout and development dam side. Likeable type and looks welll bought for 25k. Taller, leggier, than the winner and a bit narrower but a solid build and ok scope to develop. Doesn't move like a sprinter and this 6f looked too short. In the race that seeme dto be borne out. Travelled ok in the leading line tot he slower pace but dropped by the leaders at 2f and back to 5th. Got himself organised and chasing home best late on to get back to 2nd and looking more a 7f+ project. Not fir eanough on the day and will improve just for that. Solid type and OR80+ but see whether her finds 7f too sharp int he wrong set-up. Darnathean started early for trainer and he tends to front-load some usable ones. Too poor runs after running too freely in 2nd at halfway and the job here seemed to be to hold him up to finish. Pulling early and then the jockey doing nothing in the last 2f as he trundled through to the finish and a volunteer 3rd. Might also have been a 3rd-run-for-a-Nursery run and a duff 3rd so he is now qualified ok. Another taller type but less build and power than WLHare and perhaps an OR68 type. Still looks uncomfortable in headgear in prelims and has a blanket for stalls along with the race tactics. Could compete ok if he ever pulls it all together. Daunt and interesting example to use for 'Knowing too Much' to be able to Paddock Review dispassionately. Look around the Internet and Daunt's history for the last few months is there and lots of well respected people in racing get quite excited about him. His Breeze at the DBU sales in April in online and he looks pretty good, He looks like the taller, upright front, powerful type of his sire that can be good if they can control the power and run straight. The Hannon's bought him for £60k and rang up Highclere TB to offer them to him because they liked him so much. Look on he Highclere site and his story continues. They say they were not looking for a horse but put a partneship together because their BS agent liked him. Hannon Junior interviewed on the site says he was very fizzy from the sales and belted past the Highclere people when he worked for them. He said they had settled him down since but still thought a lot of him. Which means when Daunt appears you are expecting more than you get and hard to put all that 'baggage' to one side. He isn't as big as the Breeze video looked and seems to have got smaller. An ok medium neat sprinter who would probably top out around OR84 on build unless he develops. Not ready for the day and not seeing out 6f and suspect he will go back to 5f and try and be the zippy sprinter he appears. Storm Belt remarkably calm and laid back for a Godolphin 2yo. Strong bodied and a good shape but not a 6f horse. He comes across as an 8f+ galloper and has to scope, and probably the attitude given the trainer, to develop well for that. Should be OR84+ over a longer distance. Not Bad For A Boy bigger and a bit more power than Daunt but laid-back and mentally young here and connections expecting an educational outing. A niggle looking at him that he lacks the body length to go with his strngth. Might not be able to use it efficiently. But, ought to be OR75 on build but see how the movement goes. Berlusca another solid size and build in an ok group in review and fit enough FTO as the trainer's debuts often are. But, another to just no look nor move like a 6f horse. Another to need 7f+ and too green early in the race then hanging so badly in the last 2f he had to be eased. Another who can compete at OR70+ at 7f+ if he fixes the nous and hanging issues. [Barry Hills website news for w/b 13th June = "West Leake Hare ran a really nice race to finish second on his first start. He wouldn't have done a huge amount at home and has never been on the grass, but he showed plenty of ability and could be a nice horse." ] |
