SUMMARY
Good going with Going Stick at 7.2 reading at 6:30am. Stalls Stand' Side. 3mm of rain overnight. Medium Breeze, mostly a Tailwind.

Highclere Throughbred website = Post Race support = "Damask finished fourth of the nine runners on her next run at Leicester. She was a little green in the preliminaries but loaded well and broke quickly taking up a prominent position on the inside rail. The field however, pulled towards the middle of the track but Damask hung towards the stands rail and at the two furlong marker, Darryll Holland had to pull his whip through to keep her straight. It was obvious at this stage that she had given away too much ground in order to finish in the first three. " While agreeing that Damask can do better for running more professionally (has got unbalanced when asked for the effort both races) a lot of these post-race notes (trainers, etc) seem to have a problem with facing the fact that their horse might not be as good as the ones that finished in front of it.

Race seemed to have a stiff pace and the field raced centre track. The three in the leading line through halfway seemed to be pressing too hard and faded notably. Lemon Rock appeared to stay 6f in a slow race on debut but blown away here 2F out before a bade fade like a non-stayer. Damask did bst of those pressing the pace but still the best part of 5L back from the 3rd. Newcomer Besito a lokeable, bigger, type by the sire and attended the pace comfortably and able to raise some effort before a later fade. Seems an ok type to track. Overall the pace seemed to spread the field out into better newcomers as the front three, probable Open Maiden quality in 4-5th, non-stayer in 6th probably below Open Maiden quality. Lesser types broken as well back by just trying to hang on to the pace. That included Ave Sofia who had looked competitive in a messy, slow race at RIPN FTO and this race, with a true pace, showing the ability levels more visibly.

First runner of year for Michael Stoute and his 2009-10 records have been moderate by his standards. 2010 the lowest number of 2yo wins since, well, the early 1990s? Look at the sources of his 2yos and you could get the feel he is only intersted in quality, both in owners and horses. In 2007-10 he had only 5 2yo runners that cost between, a low level, 40k to 100k guineas. None of these won. He had 49 that cost 100k+ and and 17 winners from 49. The majority of his winners come from major owner breeders. A lot of runners just have 3yo set-up runs in later seasons and he doesn't look for 2nd wins much with horses after the maiden unless they are capable of better class wins. This a ypical start period for him but 2009-10 untypical FTO patterns with 2 big breaks without debuts in 2010 for some reason. Mostly splits debuts by distance and the earliest will be a few 6f one (5f rare). The 6f ones will be sprinkled through June into early July. This early set will be a mix of quality and can include non-winners. Debut wins in the last few years before August have been almost entirely absent. Zacinto being the exception. In general the early debuts finish 3rd-5th range if they are Ok Open Maiden types. Which means that Russelliana looks an unusually good (?) and natural one to win so well. A taller, leggier type and going it on rangy movement rather than pur power. Suggests she can go on to compete at higher level.

Tickled Pick a solid type and ran well and a better Cecil debut. Another better type and OR85+. First two probably just palin better than Damask.
