Going changed to GF after this race. GFG going with Going Stick 8.1 on Thu = UPDATE = 8.4 at 11:30 on day. 3mm of rain overnight and 30mm on preceding Sun-Mon period & 2.8mm Wed-Thu. Medium Breeze, mostly a Tailwind. Interesting race for at least two reasons. Presumably Fast conditions with firm going and a tailwind. Also, the strip of concrete up the Stands' rail in Full Force and anything running it looks lengths better. The following handicap won by the the rail runner in the lead from a big field witht he best closer coming down the same strip (presume Commandingpresence will be put up by Hugh Taylor as an 'Eyecatcher' for running well there away from the rail). BUT, even give that this was the FASTEST 2yo time since, at least, the start of 2002. The course does not get that many grass meetings and not that strong fields but this still a good time. Quite A Thing also ran that time eased down in the last 50 yards and probably should have broken 57s. She looks a pure nippy 5f type and a good mover and lacking strong scope. But this looked a good effort and reminiscent of Starlit Sands for the same trainer. Also interesting because the first 2yo runner for Mark Prescott who has a very structured pattern to his running of juveniles. He seems to batch runners up for debut and you can see 4 week patterns in his record. In a recent feature on him he noted that he still sat down and did his Entries on a 4 week cycle which had been the Pattern of Race publications years ago. The First batch normally has the majority of the 2yo winners he will have. The debuts do not tend to win unless they are better types capable of winning again at Novice level, at least. This debut looks a bit unusual because where is the rest of this early Batch? (Check). Quite A Thing has an all 2yo speed pedigree and has clearly been picked out by Prescott early as his most natural and nippiest 2yo. On this evidence she should be up to winning a couple more races, at least, and competitive in 5f Listed+ events. (Unless the Wind and Concrete mixture was almost unbelievably misleading |
