SUMMARY
Medium to Light Breeze as a half tailwind from the right. Stalls on Far Rail of Far Course. Newmarket classed as a RH course (one bend on at is RH) so numbering flipped over. CB in Stall 1 and next to the rail.

Race played out as if as average pace had been set. Line of Three (Lo3) eventually forming up with, from the rail out, JWH, TDad & TDL within a neck of each other at halfway. Other pair in behind and 2 to 2.5L off the leader. Lo3 members got there via different routes. TDL the fastest start and running a little freely early and leading. JWH broke ok and close up and picked up the lead on the rail after 1.5f as the apprentice got TDL settled. TDad lost 2L at the start and last early. Jockey Hughes switched him in behind and presumably the pace was not that strong. That allowed Hughes to make a couple of minor efforts to firstly go past the second rank (2R) pair and then go between JWH & TDL to join them in a Lo3 by end of first 2f.

JWH driven along before 2f out with TDad looking to be cruising alongside him. But JWH responded and went a little clear with TDad between 2f to 1f out. TDL appeared to get unbalanced inside 2f out on the downhill portion then hanging in the Dip to 1f out and dropped to last and eased. A mix of running too freely and getting unbalanced contributing to the underperforming (although he had handled the ridge-and-furrow barrels at Folkestone ok). TDad still going well towards 1f out with JWH still responding both to the jockey and the challenge of the other horse. When Hughes finally asked TDad for his effort towards the 1f mark his lack of experience showed. Getting unbalanced and hanging left, then hanging right with half a furlong to go towards JWH who responded to him again. If he had been able to pick up cleanly and smoothly you would have expected him to put 1L+ on JWH. As with many Hannon debuts he then was stalling late on and not seeing out the full distance.

Tell Dad - standard issue Medium deep fronted Hannon type (Bunce with a bit more muscle). Ran very well and the way he was able to get the 2L back he lost at the start and then travel well inside 2f quite taking. Undone by the greeness AND running into a good, fitter, more experienced and tigerish opponent. Presume OR85+. His run a good model for how the Hannon's filly might go in the maiden fillies' race here tomorrow. So far the Hannon debuts in 2010 have looked more like his typical standard than the burst of FTO winners from the start of 2010. Lacking a bit of nous and not quite fit enough to see the full distance out (the Hannon senior 'Dial' he goes on about picking out when horses are ready to run). Faced with a strong opponent here the quality wasn't good enough to produce a win. His filly tomorrow - Tea Cup - faces other horses on debut so if she is this good then she should win unless there is something Listed+ quality and ready for the day involved.

JWH - David Evans has shown us most of what he has in terms of stable strength and JWH vies with Redair to be the best he has. Good size and muscling up well and the type he keeps fining a bit of improvement with. Holds his head high at all times and this is nothing to do with his attitude and just his natural posture. Responded fully to the challenge here to the point where he seemed to be looking down at TDad on the run to the line and knowing he had the other horse covered and could have responded. [Trainer had both 2yo winners on the day with Seven Year Itch winning the seller at Catterick. That winner, like JWH here, had a horse (the odds-on favourite Nannerl) going much better than she was 1f out. As with JWH that filly was fit and battled to have things under control at the finish with the other horse stalling late on. Examples of what having your horse fit early can achieve. The notably thing with Evans is that, unlike many other trainers, they carry on battling through the season and most do not seem to go sour on the idea of racing (Mr Zarooni could learn a lesson or two..).

Chillie Billie runs for an owner breeder who has had 2yo success before. By a precocious sire out of a dam who won over 5f in early season and a sibling to a 2010 2yo winner who ran placed over 5f in mid-April. Trainer used to wind rabbits up to compete strongly in early season and has managed FTO wins by April 8th in the last two years with OR65-72 types. So, a profile to produce a solid run here in an average pace race. But, perhaps a bit better than that. Smaller than the leading three at halfway but well enough built. Trainer said in interview before the race that he did not want to take him to Folkestone (say the race TDL won this year and the trainer won with Black Baccara in 2009), or the like, because he thought this one was better than that. He thought he might try to win a £10k bonus or try a better race. Fallon riding here and had ridden the horse in work and had said he thought the horse ok. Ridden in 2R had no chance to win this and another to get unbalanced on the downhill section between 2f to 1f out and hung left. But, responded well enough in the final furlong to chase the leading pair and still going forward on the line. Did enough to suggest he is usable OR72+ rather than just the early season overwound one that the trainer has peaking by April 10th.

Sabusa - ran as you expect on what he had shown. Not good enough to go with the leading three and not seeing the full 5f out. Here to give the owner something to watch perhaps and some sort of OR60s perhaps.
