£10k Yearling bonus Race. Stalls on Stands' rail of far course and different strip to yesterday's Conditions Race. Light breeze from right. Princess Banu small and a little green on debut at Ripon and unable to attend a strong pace comfortably in that race and niggled along. Hung a little right inside 2f there as asked to make effort but unable to pick up as well as the first three and fading in the last half furlong and eased. Dwarfed here by Tea Cup with the jockey's head just coming above the top of the Hannon fillies' withers when stood together before the race.Able to break first here and control the race setting the pace next to the rail (probable advantage). Presume she is the 'Hortensia' type Newmarket maiden winner for Channon rather than Flashy Wings who won this on debut. This is as good a Princess Banu is and she will struggle as the season goes on. But, with her breeding she will be tried in better races and perhaps the Salisbury Fillies' conditions race in early May as the next step. Probably put the Changeover point either between the 2nd and 3rd or give Guru Girl the benefit of the doubt and put her on the borderline. Race often not that strong despite the Newmarket billing and last year's race instructive to look back to. 12 runners and the first 5 all won but the second ended up rated OR60s and the third (the Channon little 'un) is currently rated OR63 having been over OR80 after an early win in a soft race. Royal Blush given a 'educational intro' having been blocked in on the rail when wanting to make her effort and then getting unbalanced down the slope to 1f out. Dettori then happy just to nick 2nd late rather than chasing the winner. Seems the best prospect. Karl Burke never got 2yos winner until his in-form period started in late May to early June. He seems to be working as his wife's assistant now so interesting to see how her record compares to his. Early 3rds at Newmarket not on his CV and a sign of a solid filly in Guru Girl or more evidence for a softish race? Tea Cup draw away from the rail and green and very slow start. 9L off the leader at halfway so well out of contention. But, Hughes had her poised at 2f out to try to make an effort to at least let him get a feel for what she could do. This never materialised and she was soon moving awkwardly on the slope inside 2f out, hanging left with her head held to the right. Looking to be feeling something and the jockey quickly felt this and eased her. Interesting to see how soon she reappears. Another standard issue Hannon solid one on looks & OR80+. |
