SUMMARY
£10k Bonus race. Very light wind on day as crosswind from left.

Fast time with Newbury 5f at 34 yards longer than 5f. Only faster times since 2003 by Flashy Wings (Gp winner, 60.29s, fast going in 2005) & Southern Africa (June maiden winner in 2004 in 60.87s). Hannon's last FTO winner of the race was Cav Okay in 2006 who won in 61.18s (Good going) by a similarly clear margin from a mostly moderate or non-5f group. Winker Watson (Gp winner won same race in 2007 in 61.37s on GF going) and Klammer (Gp3 7f winner at 2yo) won in 2010 in 61.96s on good going. Cav Okay proved a very precocious one and barely Listed class and never won again, ending up at 3yo with a handicap mark in the OR80s and not competing well. Southern Africa sold to the US as a 2yo and won a lower level Grade 3 and then finishing out of the places in a raft of Grade 2-3 races. But, the overall lesson is that the majority that can run this time this early in the season ought to be Listed+ class unless the conditions are very fast and helpful. Physical maturity and scope to develop the usual determinants on where in the Listed+ range the horse peaks, and when. [OR102 rated 5yo Noble Storm won late in the afternoon by front-running on Centre-Stands' strip in 60.63s carrying 4lbs more than Magic City. Take that literally, as the BHA handicapper will with Noble Storm as he raises his mark, and Magic City did enough to win the Coventry Stakes today in a normal year. Just check that WFA again, 2yos would receive around 25lbs from mature horses in mid-April, etc].

Field raced down stands' side with the winner setting a stiff pace from the start and running a little freely. Winner 1.5L clear at halfway and hanging left soon after. SPoint ran down rail in second with a 2R line behind the leader off the rail made up of the 3rd-8th at halfway with 2-3.5L of the leader. Gaps back to the others. Later races on the straight track, this the first, tended to Group Up in Centre track.

Richard Hannon normally has a runner in the race and typically OR80+ and occasionally better ones. 2010 saw Royal Exchange (8f Listed winner at 2yo) failing to run down Gp3 winner Klammer with the pair clear of a mixed bunch. In 2008-9 the useful pair of Sun Ship and Planet Red placed for him. Magic City a more substantial physical type than the neat and ready Cav Okay. Seemed to run away with jockey Hughes to some extent here and still finish the race off. Jockey cited Canford Cliffs as surprising him with this ability as a 2yo. This one seems more likely to be the Real Thing than 'OR88' Cav Okay and vies with Silverheels as the most convincing Group race prospect seen to date.

There ought to have been enough pace in the race to place a Changeover Point. Several issues make this a bit more difficult. Large Gap back from the winner mean the placed pair produced just ok debut efforts. The others that chased the pace as the second rank line fell apart notably and a number perhaps underperformed because of that. A lot of inexperience on show as well. The effect of the pace collapsing the midfield shows up with the very tenderly ridden Letsgoroundagain able to wander around the track in the last 2f to get from 12th to 4th late on while Jockey Michael Hills checked his Tax Return. Initial reaction would be to place in after the third placer and the 4th to 8th finishers need a bit more individual thought.

Mick Channon's record in the race has got worse in recent years from the days around 2002-5 when he used to start good sprinters in it (including a FTO win for Sheikh Mohammed). His recent runners have been less good and less 5f. Last year's rep an OR60s handicapper and he ran two in 2009 who finished 4th & 8th and proved a solid Open maiden winner and a non-winner. His pair here looked a similar profile with Pitt Rivers seemingly slightly preferred with Hitchcott riding (for the same owner as the 2009 4th). You could wonder whether there is too much information available at times. The Channon website is very good and includes Gallops of most of his runners. Look at the latest video (as recent as 3 days before this race) of the Gallop involving both his runners here and PRivers is bustled up to finish the breeze first in front of the older lead horse. Signifer flops around in second rank looking green and not asked to do much. Here it is different with Signifer bouncing out and running a professional race and always sitting second rank. Able to make a solid effort to be clear 2nd as the winner disappeared off. Look at the picture of him from his works on this site and he looks ok as a well balanced, medium type if lacking some build (Channon 2yos tend to always look underfed against Hannon ones while Meehan, another Hannon ex-Assistant tries to buy a few more that look like the Hannon template). What you would take from the Channon gallop is that a lot of the work is relatively unstressed and hence the longer SPs here because they really do find out a lot on the track FTO. Presume a solid Open Maiden winner and perhaps not much over that. PRivers not obviously Open Maiden on what he did here.

Plenty of other regulars with runners int he race and it tends not to be quite as stuffed with later winners as the 'Top Track' billing suggests. Paul Cole clearly has a solid group of 2yos to start early this a second solid place to follow Silverheels win. Commissar a good size and green here (as his other FTOs so far have been) and able to make the third best effort despite this. Ought to be OR80+ but the trainer has a peculiar record in the race. Has started five good types in the race 2002-10 and all have run with promise FTO, But, only Harlech Castle & Memen (4th in 2007 & 10) have gone on to win. Henri Martin, Planet Tomato & State Fair have all failed to win at 2yo. Trainer seemed to have improved the problem he used to have with his early strong debut runners either going missing or failing to convert the promise.

Then a gap back to the 4th-8th group and looking for reasons to be positive as Open Maiden types. Barry Hills another regular in the race and again the quality recently has get less and less 5f types. Two soli dlooking 5th placed finishers in 2008 & 10 never won at 2yo and Letsgoroundagain just and okish profile. Got to 4th by never being involved and sneaking past the fading midfield who did try. Seemed to do a bit more than just plug on past faders but not really convincing. Pending tray.

Peter Chapple-Hyam normally starts with a runner in this race, usually for the Comic Strip Heroes (Winker Watson, Skid Solo, Foghorn Leghorn..). Chunky Diamond for a different owner who owned Diamond Geezer in 2010. This another son of sire Diamond Green who got lively types attitudinally in his FS who needed time to develop into their bulk. Trainer typically has this type of 2yo ready to compete but this one green and not helped by a bump at the start. Made a solid effort to get to clear 4th before a notable fade late. Much more convincing as a solid OR75+ prospect and STO winner than the 4th.

Roger Charlton an untypically early start in 2011 and this already his second runner. Tioman Legend the better type of his sire, bulky but with some length. Ran well enough here given the trainer's methods (which seems to involve all the 2yos cantering 10f together according to his website). Got himself to 5th from 9th with his efort before a fade and again a convincing case as an Open Maiden winner.

Arabian Falcon another in the Pending tray and OR70+ but perhaps not much over it. Coach Montana ought to be a good winner on Profile. First runner for a front-loading trainer and starting in a race she won in 2010 with a later Group winner and ridden by Fallon. Totally clueless and unbalanced at times here and Fallon not knowing whether to pack it in or use the whip inside the last 2f. Decided to let it trundle home in the end and not making any ground on the fading midfield. Just a medium size at best. Positive of circumstantials but negative on what he did.

Stepper Point a less taking type by Kyllachy lacking an length. Seemed to run very well for 3f and travelling quite well. Then fell apart very quickly in the last 1.5f. Trainer's earliest runner tend to win but need time to develop he has not had a winner before May28 in 2008-10. One to track for development and a surprise sometime perhaps at a lesser track.

B Fifty Two an early runner for John Hills so ought to be a competitive one but trainer has poor and inconsistent record with 2yos. He doesn't know when they are going to win so usually best to avoid his 2yos and take the odd wins he has as experience.

Trainer Millman typically gets grisly debuts now and the earlier 5f debuts are where to look for the season winners and STO blossomers. So, Meloneras has fulfilled the grisly part of the script and just need to think about whether there are any roses in her.

Powerful Wind an interesting horse. He attracted No Bid at the recent 2yo Breeze Sales. Again, go to the Goffs website and you can see his breeze. Looks an ok size and build, why the lack of a bid? Then he goes part berserk in the last 2f of the breeze and the jockey cannot hold him while he pulls away showing a climbing action. Here he is running for Ron Harris who turns out debut runners in various states of wildness and unreadiness you wonder whether he did the breeze prep. Anyway, when Ron can get then to settle down a bit they can win at a low level. Ran a little too freely here but able to go the pace for 3f+ so not a lost cause.

You wonder what Regal Entrance was here for. Trainer Noseda rarely has debuts this early and this one for a major owner so you would presume not just an early one getting going as a sighter. The trainer is very FTO oriented and season winners would normally win or place on debut. The Market does know this and the FTO winners rarely start at more than 7/2 and odds-on quite common. This one fit enough but a visor on debut along with his own handler AP and blanket. Difficult to know whether he was very green at the start and soon behind and driven along. Seriously injured towards 2f out and presume it was career ending if not terminal. Perhaps the lack of zip at the start was the horse feeling something.

[UPDATE = Barry Hills on his website befor the race = "We would like to see some rain so Letsgoroundagain can take his chance in the opening two year old maiden at Newbury. He is a nice horse who has done everything right at home, he just wouldn't want it too firm." & AFTER the race = "The show rolled onto Newbury on Friday and Saturday where Letsgoroudnagain made a very promising debut on Friday. He is a real little pro at home and behaved very well on his first visit to the racecourse. In the race itself he got outpaced, but once the penny dropped he ran on really well and made up a huge amount of ground. He will step up to 6 furlongs now, and will also be helped by some cut in the ground. He should be hard to beat next time out. " ]
