£10k Yearling Bonus race so typical that Fahey & Hannon here. All runners male. Light wind as tailwind from right. Going on straight course changed from GFG to GF before racing. Difficult race to get a handle on how it played out. Field split into three groups early with the two smaller types with previous runs pressing the pace (Umph & Profile Star) breaking best and hooking up next to the rail to make the pace. They reacted to each other and both stalling and fading before the last 1f and both had failed to see out 5f from prominent racing before. Second group made up of the front three in the betting sitting in 3rd-5th at halfway around 2L to 3.5L off the leading pair. These three best placed to jump to the lead as the leaders stalled and folded back into the group. But, they did so in diffferent ways. Kevin Ryan in a period when he should debut some better ones and Pea Shooter presumably one of these. Shorter in the betting and able to go the pace comfortably enough. Made the best (or most immediate) effort from this 2nd rank of three towards the last 1f and looked the likely winner. Switched to the rail in making his effort and got to be 1.5L clear into the last 1f. Not seeing the race out fully though and perhaps raced a bit freely early. But, probably picked up by a better type. Lilbourne Lad the first 5f debut at the course for Hannon since 2003 when he used to have runners at the Brocklesby meeting. The Yearling Bonus presumably the reason to be here. The betting said he had sent a good one but all his debuts so far have started 4/1 or less so difficult to split out what is actually going on. The Newmarket debut defeats for solid ones earlier in the week good examples of how inexperience can scupper the win even if the Market has correctly identified a good one. At which point time to congratulate jockey Dobbs for getting the win here despite some greenness. Dobbs a very good and reliable jockey and quietly accomplishes a lot more than more lauded jockeys. Jamie Spencer would not have won on this one and would have been stood up in the saddle by the line in 4-5th looking pointlessly conspicuous. Hughes would probably have won but might have taken the course of waiting for next time inside the last 1f. Inside the last 2f LL on the rail and taking time to respond. The jockey on Pea Shooter took the opportunity to cut him up on the rail to make his effort to the lead. No panic and Dobbs just keeps woking at getting LL to pick up. Which he eventually does and makes a strong effort in the last 0.5f to win a little comfortably. Good effort. A bigger type with the build to match his price. OKD perhaps ran a bit too freely in the lead LTO so the jockey hooked him back early to sit midfield. Another to take time to get going and plugging on to 3rd late on. In effect, OKD is Fahey's 'Triggerlo' in being an early placer type who sets a standard but is vulnerable to proper Open Maiden types and has been beaten by 3 x debut runners in his last two runs who fit that model. Which means you would put OKD somewhere around the Changeover Point and Profile Star and Umph are OR60s types which is why they cannot hang on long enough to be involved in the finish. The difficult question is then what to make of the other five? All made dreadful starts and made up an ugly bunch behind for the first half of the race being driven and niggled along to various degrees. If none had got involved but some made some progress then that would have seemed ok. But Stop the Video inside the last 1.5f and Choisan, Liebesziel & Flying Pickets are making efforts on the outside of the group and nearly level with OKDude (who had been niggled along at times to keep with the pace) and not that far behind the winner whom Dobbs is considering using the whip on to get him going. You presume the pace had droped with the leading pair folding back and with OKD and LLad taking time to responds the other three had been able to use their efforts to close up. The final furlong supports this with the first three going away again and Flying Pickets had been hampered before the last 1f, Liebesziel had faded inside the last 0.5f and Choisan was fading later on. Choisan a Tim Easterby debut at a period (Mid April) when he normally starts a batch of solid ones. With a FTO winner at Ripon earlier on the day Choisan comfortably did enough to believe he is another. These debuts tend to need some time to develop and handicappers like Boundaries and Flaneur have been good examples in the last 2 seasons. But presumable better than OKD and a winner somehere even if he comes up a bit short in Open Maidens. Liebesziel another McCabe small one and ought to lack the Choisan promise on physical grounds. The trainer can get the best out of these small ones but not an Open Maiden types and more an auction type or low level handicapper. David Nicholls has an inconsistent record but overall good with 2yos and get strong debuts and wins. But, not at consistent times. JJ Leary too green to get involved here and given a quiet time. But ought to be competitive as an early runner for the trainer so one to look for to improve notably STO. |
