For 2yos by Sires whose Median is up to £15,000. Light wind on day as a Tailwind. Stalls on Stands' rail with Draw 1 in Centre track and 11 next to the Rail. Field raced Centre Track. Rule 4 10p/£ because of Casa Bex WD at the Post having refused to be loaded into the stalls (without getting too worked up though). Seemed a moderate race overall depending upon what type of early Leicester runner for Michael Bell (and a major owner) Apostle was. Putting him to one side the result is understandable. Triggerlo seemed promising in the Brocklesby after being green in early race. The final time for the Brocklesby was slow and the form suspect. Some horses to take a positive view of hidden in it but not a strong midfield on the evidence so far. Triggerlo looks the eternal placer mould in Paddock Review (OR65-73 and always vulnerable in Open Maidens because of that (i.e. likely to run into real OR75+ horses). Here he was able to set a solid pace and ran well enough in seeing off the pair from the poor Folkestone race who sat in 2nd & 3rd at Halfway. But, at Nottingham STO he had not really raised much of an effort in the last 1.5f and similar here. Still a bit clear towards the final furlong but not really going forward and if you backed him you just know something is going to pick him up. He seemed to respond a bit when passed until fading late. He will run a lot and find a race he can win but if he could find a bit more umph in the last 1.5f it would be less ugly. Just when you think David Evans has used up any solid ones he has Cockney Fire turns up. From the same source as his best 'later' debut in 2010 as a half sister to Kumbeshwar for the same owner breeder. Sat in midfield and took time to get going but able to find enough in the last 1f to pick up the wavering Triggerlo. A little taller than the colt if more lightly made. Ok for OR73+ and a little scope to develop. Another that the trainer will run a lot and will find something else she can win. That pair not setting a strong standard and not a 3rd+ group to be taking much interest in. Xinbama given a hiding ridebut a small one for a negative trainer, so, so what. Michael Bell regularly starts 2-3 juveniles in April and they will usually be competitive types. But, FTO wins are rare and wins, at all, in April are uncommon (leaving aside the wholly untypical start in 2008 with one very good, and one very precocious and natural 2yo). His recent April debuts at Leicester = Naughty Girl 3rd in 2002 (placer), Promenade FTO winner 2003 (Conditions winner), Langston Boy 4th in 2004 (non-winner), Forces Sweetheart 5th in 2005 (average winner), Blue Monkey 3rd in 2006 (non-winner), Art Connoisseur FTO winner in 2008 (Group winner), Farmer Giles 6th in 2009 (development winner after problems). You could add in Old Master Expert who disappointed at the course in May before taking time to scramble an ordinary maiden win. The overall message being even though most of the above were solid physical types for major owners they could be 'anything'. Group winners, non-winners and a sprinkling of suspect attitudes. Apostle bought by Highclere specifically to be an early runner. Watch the video on their site of John Warren (their yearling buyer and some close-ish relation of The Queen) and last October he was already saying this one would be their first runner. So the trainer had some external expectations on him. But, he needs the horse to be well above average and with a natural attitiude to win this early in the season. This one a short, compact, deep-bodied son of the sire and looks a 5f sprinter in shape. More bulk than most in the race because he cost so much more. Because the race limits entries on the sire's sales MEDIAN the best types (most expensive) of the sire can get in if he had any. Which means the physical types on show can vary hugely. But, Apostle a sloppy attitude and not looking that fit. A negative as being ready for the day in Review. Then behaved worse than his pre-race looks in the race. Hanging left and losing ground early on and not responding to the jockey. Never responded even to the typical Hayley Turner thrashing in later race. On previous evidence this type for the trainer tend to disappear for a while then struggle to win an ordinary Northern maiden. |
