SUMMARY
Light to medium breeze on the day as a part tailwind from the left.

Solid pace with AEW pressing on from a good break in stall 6 and able to get over to the rail comfortably. Those inside either a little slow or were held back to allow the pressers (and those wanting to get involved properly) to force past them from wider draws. The first five at halfway came from draws 6-10 while those who were closer to the rail in 1-5 were in the back half of the race with Lyricist at 4L off the lead and the others between 6-12L behind AEW. PTheory also able to get over from a wide draw to join the leader after 1f. EClarets started worst from a wide draw and last early. Able to make some progress after 1.5f in Centre track and then cut over to the rail by halfway with the back half of the race hanging or not ridden to get involved. Other Fahey runner - Springleaf also a slow break from the widest draw and never able to get in and always racing wide on the uphill bend. Another Fahey FTO win but typical this season in not being caused by readiness and a professional run. Leading pair went hard enough to soften themselves to allow EClarets to get 4L back on them in the last 2f and catch AEW near the line.

Recent editions of the race have topped out with an upper OR70s winner and odd winners behind. 2008 saw the winner rated OR80+ which she never was and she has won off OR50s as an older horse. The third behind her won a claimer and the 4th was seller winner class. A better horse in the ruck but with a trainer who took time to get the horse's straightened out (last seen as a bookie's rep). The 2009 winner was a classic Channon FTO win for Jaber Abdullah (see Bath race today) who is rated around OR75 at 4yo and beat a Bill Turner claimer type who is competing off OR60s as a 4yo now. The third was the best horse but on debut for John Quinn before he changed into a 'Ready FTO' trainer. There were two seller winners behind. In 2010 the winner was a Kevin Ryan FTO win in mid-April which usually suggests a better type. The 9 fillies behind her managed a single win, in a seller, in the rest of the season and a hint the winner did not have to be that good.

An interesting story hangs off Geesala, last year's winner, since she went on to win the Listed Hilary Needler Trophy. But she ended up being beaten in nurseries off OR70s and so did the fillies close behind her for the most part. Listed races for fillies have to achieve an average rating of OR90+ regularly to maintain Listed status (Open Listed races is 95+ = 90 + the 5lb WFA for males). Look at the current list from the BHA and the Hilary Needler is the only Listed race in trouble. It needs a vintage edition in 2011 to save it from being downgraded to Conditions level. The other Listed race needing a boost is the Marygate Stakes for fillies which was magicked out of thin air in 2006 to precede the Hilary Needler. The ratings and the trouble both are in suggest that was a poor decision and there simply are not the number of quality fillies around to need two Listed races that early. So, Beverley and Hilary Needler get shafted so that York can have another Listed race abetted by the Pattern Race Committee. Well done, everybody. Looking down the List of current Pattern Race ratings for the juvenile Listed races the oher striking point is how consistent the ratings are. Packed into a small range. The dead hand of Race Standardisation thinking showing through with handicappers working for the same end, and organisation as the Committee, producing the answers they 'want' to get before they started. How terribly convenient. You have to fail by a huge margin, like the demonstrably OR70s handicappers winning the Hilary Needler for the handicapper (and the 'not training on' excuse) to be able to put you in the pre-prepared pigeonhole.

Which is useful background to consider this year's race against. Three fillies steaming well clear in a faster time could have you thinking they were very good. Another take would be they were well clear of garbage (unless Springleaf is a nursery project and her SP owing a lot to the 'Second String' effect). The time was only a little quicker then Grand Zafeen ran in 2009 and she was an OR70s filly. One to check with later runs from the front three but the rating here based on a true run race and the leading fillies OR70s of some sort.

One caveat to that would be the way Ebony Clarets managed to win. She was last after a slow start and still had to make a lot of ground in the straight. But for the leaders going so hard she wouldn't have got to the lead late on. But, she did and was still going forward at the finish. She can clearly improve her rating and might well be an OR80+ developer.

Mark Johnston had a poor 2010 by his standards and his debuts so far have been moderate with horses getting involved to some degree but not seeing out the trip. AEW his first STO runner and for an important owner in his own syndicate set-up. She had run pretty well from a wide draw FTO and racing centre track until getting tired late on. Shorter type and with some length and not a 5f pedigree but has some zip and a thorough trier. Able to control the race here and make a solid effort 2f out and fight on well until the late stall. She probably isn't OR75 on the long view but there are Northern Fillies she can win on what she showed here which is perhaps not far short of her maximum.

Tom Dascombe has had two winners and two solid debuts from precocious early types with limited scope. This perhaps informed the strong support for PTheory who looked a similar ready type if with a limited more power. You would presume she is a little better than Van Go Go, for example (seller entered before her auction race win). PT ran fine here and did not appear to have any excuses. Unable to match the effort of AEW at the 2f mark and then getting back to her inside the last 1f but then fading late on allowing AEW to pull away again. Perhaps low OR70s unless she has more scope than was apparent

Presmably not much behind other than the odd seller & claimer level types after the Springleaf point. ONIHvn a compact, small type for Ann Duffiled and competent but plain not good enough. Lyricist green and went too freely to post and overshot the stalls. But, not looking the better type for the trainer that could compete well FTO. Waybuloo bullied into the race but fading early again and no hint the support on debut had any substance beyond the unusual jockey booking. If Gay Kelleway has an early 2yo filly who can win it is not obvious we have seen her yet on course. Tim Easterby in period of starting out some solid handicappers and Punchie a sibling of a FTO winner for the stable last year. Given a quiet ride early then got a little hampered and allowed to drift out of it aftwerwards so might have an excuse. Worth checking whether SGordon is up to seller class. Trainer rarely has 2yo runners and possibly never had a winner. Jockey allowed her to drift back and ende dup last. Showed some low level promise with her effort amongst the back half of the race in the last 2f and an ok size amongs the rabbits.
