Going given as GFF previous day with 7-10mm of water applied to the whole course. 7mm applied to the last 4f in the straight on the day before racing. Light wind as a Tailwind from the the right. Stalls attached to the Stands' Rail. Deduction of 35p/£ for late WD of Hamza. Another Fast Time with dry warm weather following a dry spring and, presumably, low water tables and lack of watering here. Only faster time since the start of 2004 when Godolphin's Council Member ran 60.14s in early June 2004 carrying 6lbs more. With Newcastle not running many 5f races after early-Mid season most races in that period run on GS or slower and an indication of the untypical nature of the current weather period. Only two other times under 61s in that period with Royal Island running 60.6s two weeks before Council Member in 2004 and Mister Hardy's 60.9s in the equivalent Novice race in 2007. Other sub-62s times by juvenile Group 3 winner Masta Plasta in 2005 (61.12s) and 61.04s by On The High Tops in May last year. Which gives a good idea of the sort of quality that runs these times. Council Member a 3yo Listed winner in France, Royal Island won off OR93 at 3yo and OR103 at his peak (now kicking around off OR50ish), Mister Hardy a similarly precocious 2yo and competes off OR90 as an older horse. On The High Tops disappointing at 2yo but has won his debut outing at 3yo off OR76 so is presumably an OR80+ in real terms. Interesting to go back to 2002 and the last really dry Spring and Marcus Eile ran 60.03s to win the equivalent Novice race (having won a division of the same Beverley Auction as Lily's Angel, round and round we go) whose rating peaked at OR90 at 2yo but he never won again with his OR going steadily down to OR47 at 4yo before packing it in 24 races later. OR78ish Times Review ran 60.9s in early June that year. Notably fast conditions on day with OR58 4yo winning the later 5f Class 6 handicap in 59.67s carrying 8lbs more than this winner. That field raced Centre to Stands' side for the first half of the race before drifting to centre track. Winner raced centre track throughout. Hamza loaded first and got fractious while waiting for the others and held by a stalls handler. Propped to break the hold then reared up and fell down under stalls leaving the jockey stood on the back of the stalls. Handlers rushed to open the gates at the back and the horse managed to struggle out from under himself. But facing the opposite way to the one he entered the stalls suggesting he had reared over far enough to fall onto his back. Then must have twisted over to get to his feet. Medium size (probably typical of his sire and grandsire) and a Novice to Conditions level on looks. That took away one of the previous front-runners and SFlyer broke best and led after a green run FTO. Raced off the rail in Lanes 1-2 and this left the rail open for Lily's Angel to run. She had stalked the pacemaker at Beverley and effectively ran the same race here. Travelling well in behind the leading colt. Making an effort (along the rail here and not having to switch out as on debut) to join the leader inside the last 2f and then responding well in the duel which took the pair clear and both still going forward at the finish. A little narrow and leggy and seems to rely on athleticism as mush as power. Her run run style and willing attitude suggest she can rate higher. SFlyer the best type of the four and a good run here with a strong finish off the lead. Perhpas mugged here by a nippier filly and should stay 6f and develop further. More relaxed here in the prelims after being a bit wild on debut. Marford Missile the other previous front-runner and broke a little slowly widest and had to be niggled along to go and join SF. Never seeming to be going smoothly and not able to travel with SF comfortably. Raced away from the rail and hanging left from halfway and worse when asked for his 2f out effort. Smaller, ready type, and clearly got a win off a soft lead FTO and the quality of that form not high. Dascombe horses form can tail off after bright starts but not usually this quickly. Presume some form of lower 70s type. |
