SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

Light to Medium breeze as a half headwind from the right.

Two other 5f races on the card with Stone Of Folca winning the first race of the meeting in 60.45s carrying the same weight. He is rated OR101 but won without the jockey moving and just doing enough to finish in front of a filly rated OR65 (a maiden after many runs) carrying 5lbs less. The later handicap a messy race but a solid performance by Liberty Lady in winning in 59.23s carrying 2lbs more. She is a 4yo running off OR76.

Gatepost perhaps an example of how the increased, and variable, amount of information on trainer websites can be useful. Channon site puts the group 'Breezes' (not the AW training) available on their website. Looking at the historical members of the Breezes perhaps informative. Gatepost another to appear to have been upgraded to work with better horses. The latest breeze, 4 x 2yos plus an older lead horse, he was involved in was made up of Signifer (strong 2nd in tough Newbury maiden last Friday), Pitt Rivers (midfield in the same maiden) and Factory Time (FTO winner at Bath 2 days ago at Bath). Gatepost appearing to go less well in that breeze than Signifer & Factory Time. This FTO win typical for Channon in that getting debut wins for new Arab owners to the yard is something he targets. [He had more FTO wins for Sheikh Mohammed in the brief spell that owner was in the yard (before the Godolphin yards took on the 2yos), than the other owners put together.] - to make the point - [Update by Channon on his website = ["I'm delighted with that, but I expected him to go very well. Marwan was on the phone this morning and I forgot to remind him that we have a 100% record in his colours! This is a lovely colt and we'll look at the Lily Agnes at Chester, which is Marwan's favourite track and always the intentional next step if he went well today."]

Gatepost does not stand out for size on the gallop videos and didn't in this group. He seems to have a straightforward attitude and be a Quiet Professional (QP) who accomplishes more than you think because of the lack of frills. Ridden by Jamie Spencer here and gave him an 'armchair' ride after a slightly slow start because of being sat back when the stalls opened. A little free early but soon settled to 5th on the rail and 3.5L off the lead at halfway. Despite the fast going the times not especially quick on the straight course on the day and the front-runners not really lasting home. Not one of those Folkestone meetings where whatever grabs the rail and the lead at the start will win. Smooth progress to close up to CofRemark and go clear relatively comfortably. On visual impression that seemed pretty taking. A niggle in that the CofRemark/Triggerlo form seam (going back to the Brocklesby) does not seem that good for them and any horses behind them (without excuse). An unexciting physical model like The Penny Horse looked as good running over COfRemark a Nottingham, for example.

Another example of the Internet info would be John Best's weekly Video blog. On that he says the horses have not been performing as well as he would like but all the blood tests have come back negative indicating no apparent problems or causes. He was hopeful the horses would come right and was expecting Stone Of Folca to win the opening 3yo 5f maiden on this card. He was Group placed at 2yo and his best opponent a filly rated OR65 so he had to win even if below his best. Which he did comfortably. Mr Best said that Bayleyf was the only early 2yo he had ready and wanted to see how he went as a marker for his other 2yos. His approach with 2yos has bounced around as the number of runners he has has fluctuated a lot. But, look back to 2008/10 seasons and the earliest 2yos he ran proved competitive 2yos and showed up well FTO. Stone Of Folca being an example with a 2nd in a Novice race as his 2nd runner. In 2008 two of his first three runners won and were 3rd on debut. They both ran in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot (as Stone Of Folca did) finishing 1st & 3rd (in the wrong order with the 100/1 shot victorious). But, that profile would give you hope that Bayleyf was the best of his early ones and ought to be OR70+ and could be much better. Bigger than the favourite here and better built than CofRemark. A solid, ready sprinter if a bit too free to post and a bit green in the race. But, a good staying on second in the last 1f to match the expectations for him on profile.

Change Of Remark a leggy type and lacking some build and given a too forcing ride here. Jockey Gannon having to get him to work quite hard to clear and cross Karuga from a wide draw and eventually getting over to the rail. She briefly settled the pace but seemed to press on before halfway and had got CofR 2.5L clear at that point. With front-runners not really lasting he was picked off by the winner comfortably and passed by Baylef later on as CofR folded. Not Open Maiden class so always vulnerable to the better types in this sort of race. But, will run a lot for Evans so will win something down the line, even if umpteenth TO.

Karuga a filly but looking a solid physical type against the males and a solid type as the Hannon rep in a £10k bonus race. SP suggesting that they thought she was ok (say OR75) rather than a better one and the Hannons presuambly knew from Channon that he thought Gatepost would run as he did. Karuga broke best from a wide draw and could have crossed to the rail and lead. Jockey Moore deciding he wanted to take a lead so held her back to allow CofR to get over to the rail. Green before halfway, racing away from the rail and then hanging right in the last 2f. Fading notably late on. A mixed story and perhaps paid for racing too prominently. A mixed story but take as an OR75 now and usable in an Open maiden without the better types.

Chillie Billie again ridden by Fallon who also rode the stable's Black Baccara in the later 5f handicap (duelled for the lead on that one and faded notably). CB looked small at Newmarket and small in this group. At Newmarket he got unbalanced on the downhill section before find a response late going uphill. With the mix of barrels and firmer going here he never looked to be going that well. Also ran too freely early and fought with Fallon for 1f. Nothing happened when asked for his effort and hanging right badly and the jockey soon packed it in (no WTRB report). Size an issue and the way the trainer's 2yos form tails off another. Perhaps worth another chance on slower going and a stiffer stamina test but can the trainer produce that sort of 'fix' after this poor effort?

Night Angel very green and unhelpful on debut and better here without looking relaxed with the idea of being a racehorse and still too nervous of the world in general. Another slow start but plugged on through the hangers and garbage late on. Trainer gets grisly debuts and improved STOs these days and STO blossomer wins often at long price. NAngel a bit on the small side to ever think she would win STO and this effort was an improvement. Can improve a bit further for growing up mentally but still at a low ratings base.

Si Sealy shortened notably on debut and 66/1 here. Doesn't look a 5f type and staring early because that is what the trainer does. Too slow here and presumably needs further and to develop. Worth noting the horse was leant on the side of the stalls and fell out of the stalls like a drunk slipping off the end of the bar. Shouldn't the jockey be fixing that before the gates open. He then bumped into Gatepost whom Spencer had sitting back and not attending. Gatepost was good enough to get Jamie out of the problem.

John Hills a negative as a 2yo trainer overall and normally starts his 2yos in early May. This already his third debut with FTSCom but no signs that the early start is because he happens to have some early 'naturals' in 2011 and another poor debut. Look back to previous years and, with the exception of 2010, the earliest runners have been season non-winners. The early 2010 debuts included two bigger types (obviously with a bit more to them on Paddock Review) who did manage to win for him. Hard to work up any enthusiam for the futures of the three he has run so far although all have been given invisible debuts.

Ian Wood's record with 2yos has varied and he alwys struggled to get average strike rates and clean career development. But you look at his recent stats and wonder what has happened. In 2004 he ran 35 juveniles, only mid-teens 2005-7 and then 5-1-3 in 2008-10. Where have the horses gone? But he still seems to get a winner a year and the earliest runner often the competitive one. Samasana relatively expensive but perhaps not the full 5f type. Adrift from early on after veering from the stalls. No response later on and an early fade not good signs. Worth a minor check STO to see how she has developed.
