SUMMARY
Going Watered to produce GFG (no details given). Going Stick 8.6 = same Going report for April 16th meeting but Going Stick then notably faster at 9.0. Going Good for March 31st meeting and 8.3 Stick reading. Stalls Stands' Side with Low Draws away from rail. Stiff to Strong Wind on the day as a three-quarter headwind from the right.

[Dreadful meeting with one race abandoned because it was below the Horseman's Tariff and no runners declared (following a Walkover for similar reason at the last meeting) and another with 4 runners. That race due to be sponsored by Ladbrokes so the racecourse putting even less into it. To produce a 6 race card the course had split a 12 runner 3-4yo maiden to produce 2 x 6 runner divisions. Dreadful stuff but a cheapskate track and unlikely to drop their steep entrance prices. A course that likes to build but has little idea about marketing, atmosphere creation, race planning, etc. You would worry.]

Free Verse a NR as a possible strong debut for The Queen on Royal Wedding day. 5th NR for Hannon of the year and all with "Sore Shins" as the reason. 4 x Self Certificates (6 days before the horse is allowed to be declared and run) and 1 x Vet's Cert (2 days break). The one they got the Vet in for ran 2 days later on the AW at WTON. All very convenient.

Stalls stands' side but field raced centre track. DA pinging the stalls and setting the pace and choosing the strip to race on. PT within 1L of her through halfway settled. Fanoos just over 3L back with RS and the already driven along and struggling to go the pace Unforgiving just losing touch with this pair. IG probably 15L adrift of the lead and driven along.

PT supported on debut as if a solid one but ran a little wide and unable to get past Always Ends Well (rail hugging) and not quite seeing 5f out at uphill PFCT. Able to attend the pace here comfortably then raise a good effort to pass DAges quite quickly as the pair put a little distance on the 2R inside last 2f and able to delay final efforts a little. Strong finish for a mostly full ride. Typical, rangy mover if front of sire that often do not train on into second half of season. This looked a good OR80+ effort at this stage and that would mean she would be competitive in an average Hilary Needler before her precocious zip wears away, relatively. Her effort here makes Always Ends Well defeat at BTON yesterday seem something that needs to be explained rather than thinking she ran anywhere near her PFCT form.

DAges a different type and the smaller, bull type of the sire, solid effort here at 2f although picked off. Not seeing 5f out having made pace into a headwind. Similar at NMKT on FTO when fading in last 0.5f. Not really Open Maiden class and a negative for the overall quality of the NMKT fillies race she ran in. The winner of that lacks any scope and only Royal Blush and Tea Cup seem ok prospects. Race generally over-rated elsewhere because of the NMKT Race Standardisation effect.

John Gosden runs very few over 5f and is usually selective with them. The pair of filies here brings his total to 3 x 5f runners in 2011 with another starting tomorrow. His total of debuts over 5f in 2008-10 was 3 and none in 2006 with 3 in 2007. The earliest debuts over 6f in May are often rancid and debuts in April very rare. Just two seasons with April starters in the last 10 years shows how unusual the current burst is. But, both runners here clearly short of nous and he hasn't had enough time to get his FTOs competent yet.

In 2010 his sole FTO at 5f was a win with Maqaasid (Queen Mary winner) as late as May 20th and she lost ground at the start and needed a pace war up front to soften the leaders up enough to get to them late (along with being well above average quality). Fanoos very young and green in the prelims and clearly going to struggle for nous. With the leaders running usable races here and Richard Hills being very easy on her when she did not pick up 2f out Maqaasid wouldn't have got the ground back. Towards 3f out she, along with the two leaders, going ok and better than the two smaller ones (RS & Unforgiving). When asked to pick-up she was too green and Hills packed it in early. Clearly much better than she showed in the last 2f. Medium size, well built and carries herself well. Solid OR84+ and good STO prospect. Trainer usually selective with small number of 5f runners and the poor debuts mean he is profitable to follow long-term with STOs at 5f (6-12 between 2002-10 and a small profit). This is usually long-term because of the few 5f types. This season is like 5 years packed into 1 if they all prove to be real 5f types.

His other runner was for his wife and Iceni Girl a taller, leggy type but strongly built in a workwomanlike way. Sire not a good FS and only odd 5f wins. This one utterly clueless and adrift before 1f had gone. But, got back to the Group in the last 2f from well back so either they faded a lot or she is OR75+.

RS low OR60s, at best, and ran close to what she can do. Struggling to keep up with the three better, and bigger fillies towards 2f out. Unforgiving another McCabe small one and seemed to get blown away here.
