SUMMARY
Odd race conditions and titled a "Maiden Auction" but weights standard open maiden WFS (9-3 & 8-12). To qualify for the race the runners must have cost £12k or less at auction but no weight bands below that top-level qualification.

Good going with Going Stick at 8.4 and watering to maintain that going. Stiff wind on day, mostly a Headwind.. Slower times on day and 5f Class 4 handicap run as race 8 at 5:45 run in 61.06s by an OR79 rated 7yo.

Straight course infamous for high draw and stands' rail bias. In 2010 there were 9 x 5f races for 2yos with 7-8(x2)-9(x2)-11-12-13 runners. Some highlights = No FTO win (all S-4TO), All races run on Good or Firmer and Prominent Racing close to the rail a big positive with 3 x Front-runners winning, 1 x 2nd through halfway, 4 x 3rd through and 1 x 4th. 5 of the 9 within 1L of the lead at halfway, 8 within 2L and the other at 2.5L. 8 of the winners either on the rail or one off it through halfway with the other winner in Lane 2.

Winning draws were 3 of 7 (T3), 8 of 8 (F), 8 of 8 (F), 4 of 9 (F), 3 of 9 (T3), 9 of 11 (T3), 13 of 12 (P2), 6 of 13 (P3), 9 of 13 (T4, LBL1.7). Which all means the early morning punters on Betfair on Farang Kondiew as a FTO in stall 7 of 16 had better be pretty sure he can start fast, cut across, and race prominently. He is at a 2L+ disadvantage before the Stalls have opened so he had better be real quality in context of this low level race set-up.

Interesting result to this race in the context of the expected type of race. Worth noting that in the other straight course races running in centre track away from the rail looked a slight positive, if anything. Racing prominently an advantage in those races and a good deal of hanging left away from the stands rail in the last 1f plus. In this race Profile Star running in Lane 2-3 off the rail and started hanging left inside the last 2f. This caused a fair bit of knock on hampering to those behind around 1.5f out. His effort took him clear of the group around him inside the last 1.5f and continued hanging to end up close to the Far Rail. The only horse to match his effort was Amadeus Denton who had raced on the outside of the group. PS picked him up as the pair duelled from 1f+ out and carried AD across the track. A Stewards' Enquiry lef tthe result unchanged. But, ADenton looking up at the bigger PS as carried across and intimidated to some extent on his first run. Winning margin enough to save PS plus the fact that he never seemed to stop himself and the fact that AD deferred to him meant they never seemed to bump.

Slower time and Halfway positions to Final Placings might suggest a Pace War but that did not seem to be the case. The Headwind clearly had some effect and seemed to cause some of the general hanging right. At halfway the first three were in a line with less than length between them. The 2R of the horses in 4th to 8th at Halfway were between 1L to just over 2L, the 9th at 3L and the 13th at 5.5L. That does not like a strong pace with everything under pressure and struggling to go the pace. A number of runners having to be held back to drop-in and a small number of runners racing too freely in the first 2f. Why some of the prominent racers faded needs more thought. The 7-8th at halfway placers were only 2L of the lead and both racing towards centre track. Auntie Joy may have got from 11th to 4th but beaten a long way by the first three and only 4.5L back at halfway. She got left behind by the 1st three and managed to plug on to a volunteer 4th through the fading 2R. She also did it by being one of the few horses who kept close to the rail and that left open by the hanging.

PS - David Barron typically starts with 2-3 competitive 2yos and the win here means all three he has run have won. All three with the Market showing that a good run was expected. PS faded on debut running too free on softer going. A good question would be what happened STO at DONC where he duelled with Umph for the lead and this seemed to break both of them. Here PS raced more controlled but so did Umph and that one still faded badly. But, Umph a lesser type with less scope and not really staying 5f and PS presumably developed more. OR70+ here but probably no far over in a moderate to poor field overall.

Michael Dods over-prepares his 2yos and he gets lots of strong debuts and the SPs of the wins over the years mean he is often profitably to follow. His earliest debuts used to include winners but the wins had not started until later May in 2009-10. The Market also seemed to over-react to his 'Stobart' owned 2yos (more expensive than his usual) so debuts for them less value (with the 2nd String Effect needed o make Well Sharp value in 2010). But, with AD as his first runner this year not untypical for him to be a competitive one and running well. Green at time but always learning quickly. Perhaps not much scope to improve and probably not full Open Maiden type but likeable effort int he last 2f here and never stopped.

Fayr Fall OR60s and clear 3rd best which puts the rest of the field in perspective although some interesting stories. Mick Easterby & Nigel Tinkler both solid preparers for debut and both get placed FTOs at longer SPs. So, no surprise in a mixed group like this to see their pair finish 4-5th at long odds. The Tinkler 2yos ar not worth following and Rent Free showing low level form. A bit more interest in Easterby's Auntie Joy whom the jockey tried to make anonymous. Travelled quite well in context and trundled into a remote 4th without being asked for much. Might be usable at a low level.

Declan Carroll has a long history of early season punts on his horses so only mild surprise to see Farang Kondiew 2nd fav on Betfair in the AM and then into favourite on course. By sire Selkirk who doesn't get 5f winners to a solid approximation. Solid dam can add some 6f zip and ok size in this group. As it worked put if he had run straight from his draw he would have been in a good spot on the leeward side of the group with the 2nd & 3rd placers. But, horse shaking his head when the stalls opened and a slow start. Jockey then dropped him in behind the group in Lane 2 off the rail. Green when asked to make his effort 2f out and no immediate response. Plugging on in the last 1f in the stands' side group. Presume need further and to wise up.

Triggerlo needed niggling as usual to get going then ran too freely. Did not even produce the minor effort he has before 2f out and soon fading. Probably add a suspect attitude developing .Running 2R here seemed a possible to improve his finish but seems to plain lack a 5f finish. Probably needs further.

Other pair to get to the leading Lo3 faded badly with Xinbama not a STO improver for the trainer although put into the race this time. Apprentice rather than Sanders. Dolly Danca a small half-sister to the small Tilly's Tale. Showed some speed and a positive attitude to get prominent. Hampered before fading so might have some excuse. But, with the 3rd in the race probably seller class not really worth delving to deeply into the ruck.
