SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

GF going with watering as 6mm applied the prvious evening after racing. Stalls on Stands' side so Low draws away from the rail. Strong wind on the day as a three-quarter headwind from the right. In the earlier races this seemed to be a disadvantage to the front-runners and Dettori made a big point after winning the 1,000 Guineas with a hold up ride that riding in the earlier races had made him change his tactics. He was riding a staying filly for whom 8f was a minimum and he woul normally ride a more forcing race. The Strong Wind dictated his tactics. Dettori said he felt the wind was stronger than the previous day.

30/04/11 - Hannon on his website = "Tell Dad missed the kick first time out and would probably have won had he got off on terms. He showed plenty of speed but just tired in the last 100 yards, and, while the original plan was to go to Chester, we had a rethink and felt that this was the right race for him. We also run Democretes, who is a nice Cadeaux Genereux colt. He did a good piece of work on Thursday and is ready to roll.."

27/04/11 - Noseda on his website = ["My only runner at Newmarket is likely to be Rio Grande in the two-year-old maiden. He is a colt by Invincible Spirit who I like, I have been pleased with his homework and I am hopeful that he can put up a good showing on debut."]

Rule 4 at 15p/£ because of Rio Grande being withdrawn. RG reared up in stalls and part fell backwards and jockey off. Managed to pull himself upright. All horses loaded and just waiting for the started when he reared. So, taken straight out and race started. RG a little mentally immature in the prelims. Market saying just an ordinary debut expected and not a strong one given how short the winning debuts tend to be for Noseda.

Stalls Stands' side and field race away from the rail. Average pace at most with Commissar allowed a comfortable lead 1L clear of the others. Whole field within 3L of the lead to halfway and the 2R of 4 (2nd - 5th to halfway) within 1.7L of lead with only Liebesziel tucked in behind the leader and the other three racing on wings into the headwind. Democretes wide in 3R and also not tucked in out of the wind.

Front-runner won here on a day when the headwind seemed to make a difference and the wind has had a real effect on the 2yos races in the last 2 days. Commissar able to win leading and for a number of reasons. Allowed to set his own pace unhassled and therefore a usable one. Rest of the field, especially 2R, did not shelter from the wind. Commissar had looked a bit short of pace on debut, beyond being green when asked to pick up, against the better types. A bigger type and very fit here he looked more a stayer. Able to finish the race off strongly and set a stiff standard for the others. Which meant when the race fell apart to a large extent behind him he was left as a clear winner. Fit and ready for the day and usual later Market support for a strong Cole rep. Development from this sort of effort (some sort of internal career peak) can be variable.

Tell Dad's debut form not strong and perhaps over-rated when looking at it. Only a bit clear of a horse who failed badly at FOLK and not that far clear of Sabusa who has been well beaten since. Trainer has a moderate record in the race so hints that TDad not a better one and just a solid OR80s. No excuses here, able to produce only the thrid best effort and tiring again in the final uphill run to nearly lose 2nd.

Come On Blue Chip a slightly suspect rating given he was not put intot he race and got unbalanced a little 1.5f out. A volunteer, educational into ridden, third in the ruck falling apart or some real promise? One to check STO rather than expecting a lot. On the plus side an early runner for a trainer who does front-load. Also, a smaller NMKT trainer who seems to start his ok ones at the local courses rather than just saving on diesel. Presume will go to lesser course STO and in an auction so could win STO without being OR75+.

Liebesziel another unexciting run in a stiff maiden where he seemed to show most of what he can do. Probably not 5f and need further but seems more a nursery type and questionable how much improvement.

Chunky Diamond by a sire who produced a number of types in his FS that where lively attitudes and needing time to develop into their bulks. Green on debut and then not seeing out the 5f. Ran much too freely here to live up to the attitude side. Ran better than his final placing producing the second best effort 2f out and still 2nd 1f out before the fade. Interesting one to follow because if the trainer has run him in the maidens he has then he should be ok or better. His form does not read that well but the type that could improve to surprise as a longer SP in the right set-up. Along with the winner another positive for the horses that ran in the Newbury maiden behind Magic City. Which suggests that winner either underperformed or ran into a good filly when beaten at ASCT. Or both.

Early Suroor 5f debuts are small in number and almost never ready to win. Variable quality from ordinary maiden winners to Listed class have started in this race for him. Mizbah not a strong 5f pedigree and the Market not suggesting a better and/or ready one. Green overall and unbalanced inside 2f out so another for whom the race fell apart. Perhaps an ok maiden winner at a lesser track type.

Democretes a Hannon second string and running in his colours. A bigger, lengthy type and unable to handle the downhill stretch inside 2f out and not carrying his size. A little green as well. Believable as Open Maiden class in Review and could develop over further.
