Strong wind on the day as a Tailwind. GF going with watering having been done all week up to Sunday. No Going Stick reading because it was faulty. Third day in row where the strength of the wind has played a big part in the times and the way races have been run. Current weather pattern high pressure and mostly sunny and dry. Lack of rain producing low water tables and faster going despite the top layer getting watered. Unusual part has been a stiff to strong Easterly wind as part of the fine weather. This producing faster times and this time faster than any in 2009-10 with the next fastest being 62.06s by an OR68 rated filly in Nursery on another day with unusually fast conditions. Further checking shows no faster time since the start of 2004 with the next fastest 61.62s by Ice Mountain in 2006. Next race on card won by an OR72 rated 3yo in 60.84s carrying 1lbs more. Higher class horses would have been getting inside 60s for this stiff uphill 5f track. Mark Johnston introduced a better 5f debut 2 days ago after a break from an underdone opening batch. Probably some element of quality as well well as readiness with two FTO wins on the day (both for Sheikh Mohammed's son Hamdan) to add to Bannock's strong effort at Doncaster 2 days ago. Cravat not an obvious 5f pedigree but a good physical type and looked the part before the race. Some length of his sire but muscular barrel build and all well balanced and carrying himself well. In good condition and fit enough to compete. The dam has been an inconsistent producer but produced a similar good sprint 2yo in Cedarberg (Cape Cross) with that one placing in the Listed 6f Woodcote Stakes. Excellent effort by Cravat here to cut across from a wide draw with Superplex and race alongside that one for most of the race. Battled well in the last 2f and seeing the race out strongly. One to take a positive view of and 6f ok for him and should be up to winning Conditions level and can probably compete well at Listed level. Superplex a positive for the sire Multiplex but probably closer to the final level he can achive here than the winner. Trainer Quinn normally starts some competitive 2yos early and they can place on debut and he has started to get FTO winners again (perhaps targeted) after a break from doing that for a few years. Superplex 20/1 and anonymous in a race he should have been able to place in if competent. Unusual to see Hanagan booked at the declarations stage and the Market clearly said today he was here to show what he could do. Along with the winner cut over from a wide draw without much effort to form the leading pair and the fast conditions meant a Type 1 BVLY race with the leaders fighting it out between them. Smaller type than the winner and less scope. But, speedy and the trainer gets the best out of this type but likely to end up in nurseries. Trainer David Brown in his 4th season and has shown an interesting pattern with debuts in 2009-10. The season winners he had have started in a batch from early May through into June. In 2010 there were a couple of non-winners out a bit earlier and uncompetitive at double figure SPs. The three winners he had in 2009 finished 3rd-2nd-9th FTO at SPs of 16/1 to 28/1. Some change in SPs in 2010 with his batch of 4 season winners finishing 1st-2nd-1st-2nd FTO with SPs 3/1, 7/2 (x2) & 8/1. The first of those wins in this race in 2010 and 2 of the winners for owner Fretwell as was Tight Lipped. Which made TL an interesting horse but landing in a strong looking race with the first two home fancied to some extent as was Master Bond. 6/1 as an SP suggesting they though he might be ok for OR70+ but not a better one. Unusual type for his sire who has produced a lot of smaller, dumpy, ones like himself so far. TLipped a taller, angular, slightly narrow bodied and raw boned type by comparison. Also displaying a somewhat wilful attitude with the jockey struggling to get him to go TP and feet out of the irons for much of the way. But, a solid effort in the race and finishing the race off fully. Had been entered in the sales early this year but Fretwell presumably decided to keep him. Looking at his physical make-up and attitude you can imagine him producing mixed feelings. Not a pretty boy and troublesome but keeps growing and changing so you never quite know so stick with him. Could develop further and 6f+ ok. No interest in the Tinkler pair although FFnow perhaps showing enough to win a seller or minor race. Comedy Hour with Master Bond seeing how many things to do wrong he could cram into one race. Trainer Smart just coming into the period in May when he should be starting off the best of the sprint 2yos he has and some will win FTO. His first debut was woefully green but a break since then and MBond seemed more likely to be the ready sprinter. Second runner for FS sire Misu Bond and similar to the previous one. A bit below wvarage size but a neatly made, ready sprint. Size a bit of a niggle for much development scope (unlike Cravat) but just about believable to be powerful enough for an early race. But, clueless at the start and lost 5L plus. Then switched away from the rail as the jockey tried to get him to make an effort back to the group. He did this eventually but then started running too freely. Still threatening to make some sort of effort in centre track 2f out but then started hanging left. A Couple of bouts of this and he was alone on the stands' side. Faded soon after as you would expect. Clearly better than he showed but a lot to fix and some niggles about scope. Basantee a smaller filly and a surprise to see her so short in the Market in a tough race. Jockey Kinscote unusually not attcking the lead and the filly took the early holding up as a cue to down tools and lost a bit more ground in a race where making ground difficult. But, indistinguishable in the last 2f from the smaller types around her although the jockey not doing a lot. |
